Hello everybody.
I think that you (ZB authors) must begin to considere better selection method (sincerely, I hate spending 2 hours only to select a mask…), thru lasso and/or materials (also those coming along with a mesh imported from other apps).

How about setting up Polygroups for specific parts instead of selecting them manually every time?

Polygroups? I’m working on a mesh imported from an external app.

Yeap, agree with dsoellbuster, you can always make use of the polygoups, other than to generate good UVs island, you can make this feature to quickly select the portion of your mesh. Beside Lasso there’s also a nice and easier way to select your mesh, use the topology mask feature instead. Personally I only use Lasso for selecting small portion only, like fingers, ears, etc which you need a full control over what you’re selecting.

PS. In Max you can set the polygourps by using “Layers” and or "Selection Sets "(the 2nd option I’m not sure whether can work or not, haven’t try before, anyone have experience in this please correct me if I’m wrong) and in Lightwave you can set the “Part” feature, “Selection Sets” in Lightwave doesn’t export along your OBJ even though it ask you whether want to export the selection sets or not.

Hi. I’m in Lightwave; what should I do?

Hi Marsw…So you are a Lightwave user also, and here I can tell you how since I also working with Lightwave sometimes
In Modeler you select the face/ polys that you intended to group in polygroup later in ZBrush, then press “i” for the “info” window and press the “Edit All” (assuming that you select all polys to group in 1 polygroup) and in the “Part” down below that window you specify the name (although its not gonna carry over in the OBJ exporter, it will rename it with “group 1”, “group 2”, etc. some generic name), and that’s it! import the OBJ in ZBrush and you can see the polygroups is already set for you

Hi Revel. Thank you for the hint!
Hope anyway that ZBrush people will think to a better selection’s system (and also for moving the object…); it’s unfortunate that an app like this still lack many indispensable things, whilst many others seem very curious.

No problem
ZBrush in kinda confusing at first if you already used to the concept of modeling/ animation apps (other than ZBrush, because Z is more of a sculpting apps IMO), with the 2.5D vs 3D concept/ objects relation to each others in the canvas/ etc. its so different -at least for me- at first when I try ZBrush, compare to the Lightwave/ Max/ Maya/ any other apps.

Yes I agree with you, we always hope things will get better and better in each release. But for now we just have to use as much resources as we have and works with the limitations!

The problem is that ZB has a different operating conception; each 3d app have already its own way to operate, but ZB is much more confusing. It is also that when switching between apps in order to achieve some tasks (e. g. I’m making a dense mesh for normalmapping, and I guess that the pipeline could be very difficult…), having different approachs on icons and operations, one may get confused. Specially considering that LW isn’t so greatly preferred
in behalf to Maya and Max.
I agree that for now we must adapt; btw adaptation is also a key for creativity.

I would add this: to show / isolate the parts to work with, pass to polyframe view and then shift+crtl click the part to isolate it.

But, what’s still unclear to me, is how to do in the case that I would select multiple parts?
