Subtool displacement overlapping in maya

Hi there,

So after sculpting my model and subtools, I exported them piece by piece as outlined according to Scott Spencer’s maya ascii tip here:

http://www.pixologic.com/docs/index.php/Scott_Spencer

Everything showed up fine and displacement values gave great renders right off the bat. However I noticed that some subtools overlapped each other with the render:

Both the body and pants have displacement maps.

I tried playing with the displacment values with little success. Indeed, the ones that were pre-set with the export seemed to look best. I found a work around by slightly scaling up the geometry of the subtools or using the sculpt geometry tool to bring up the overlapping areas, but both methods seem to be pretty makeshift to me.

Would you guys happen to know if there a more accurate way to ensure that subtools with displacement do not overlap each other, especially when the main tool also has displacement maps as well?

Many thanks in advance for your help!
