Subdivision level/Memory question

Subdivision/Memory question

Hey guys

I have a model subdivided at level 6 and it has 13522880 total polys.I can’t subdivide any further.
Is it possible to reach higher sudivision levels after level 6?

I would like to subdivide more but Zbrush will not allow.

I have 4gig /64 bit system Windows Vista.

Should I add more gigs change any settings ? Any tips?

Number of subdivision levels doesn’t matter since a level 6 model can have vastly different polygon counts depending on how many polys level 1 has. What matters is total number of polygons.

Every time you divide the model you quadruple the count. Since you’re at 13.5 million right now, another division would hit 54 million – WAY above what even the most powerful system can accomplish at this point. With only 4 GB of RAM you’re doing well to have reached 6 levels with this model, although even 6 or more GB wouldn’t let you divide to level 7 regardless.

There are two options available to you:

  1. Use HD sculpting. You can hit up to 1 billion polygons, and the HD data can be transferred to a displacement, normal and/or color map.

  2. Break the model up into multiple SubTools. A model with multiple SubTools can reach considerably higher counts between them than any single SubTool can reach.

But it wouldn’t be adviceable to take the arms and legs of a human model to its own subtool, because the resulting mesh wouldn’t fit to the rest of the body. The same to the resulting displacement map for an external application.
