Strange resym reaction with imported mesh

When I try to resym the mesh I have been working on, I get this rather strange error. The mesh folds on itselft at the seam. This mesh has given me issues with the x mirror symmetry but that was solved using the possable symmetry.

The mesh was imported from an external program.

That’s actually the problem right there. You have some problems with the mesh’s symmetry itself. The deformations don’t take poseable symmetry into effect; they work directly across the selected axis as determined by the Tool>Preview window.

You mean that its an imported mesh?

I created it by using a X mirror modifier in blender, so both sides were symmetric coming in. The x mirror modifer in zbrush without using the possable symmetry correction, was off center (the icons were red than). With the poseable symmetry correction it became green and correct.

I mean that the mesh wasn’t symmetrical to begin with. I’m sure it was built symmetrical, but something along the way – probably an export setting – caused it to lose the symmetry. That’s why the poseable symmetry got you going again. But poseable symmetry doesn’t apply to deformations.

So what do you suggest I do, to at least retain most of the details from the sculpt? So that I can resym it nicely in the future?

I hope that didn’t sound condescending. I have been sick lately, so I may seem a little testy.

I don’t know if it’s going to be possible to salvage this model. It depends upon the nature of the symmetry problem.

If the problem is due to a positional variance, then you should be able to resolve it by pressing Tool>Deformation>Unify.

If the problem is due to a rotational variance, it’s going to be almost impossible to resolve. You might be able to pull it off by using the Rotate deformation, but you’d have to hit the exact angle. Not very easy to do!

Alternatively, you could try fixing the problem in your original app. If you can track down the cause of the problem, then you can export an accurate version. In ZBrush you would go to level 1 of your model and import the new version over top of the old one. That should resolve the problem.

why not delete half of your model, reimport the low res, up it a bit, then project the details from your half/hires and then resym?
also i’ve been able to salvage quite a few models through the deformation palette, i could always try to fix it for you if you’d like.

The resym make her eyes pop out, and she still inverts on herself with a resym.

The file is 15 mb, I’m not sure how to host that?

i’ll give it a shot, try using this upload service, then private message me the download link, unless you want to share it with others.

I sent to both of you the file. The file is UV mapped as well, which hopefully isn’t causing the problem.

okay this is really simple, your model is on the wrong axis, if you look in the tool: preview window you will see your model is sideways, you want it facing forward. to do this you need to

  1. clear the mask you have applied
  2. in Tool:deformation, under Rotate, uncheck all axis but Y, then do a Rotate of 90
  3. do above for the eyes.

of course you could always just leave it and just use symetry and resym on the Zaxis

the problem i think you were running into is that your model was symetrical along the Z axis but you were using Resym on the X axis.

btw, not a bad model at all, but much of your proportions are incorrect(maybe thats on purpose though), i suggest sticking a reference image on a polyplane and putting that behind your model to help you out.

What proportions stand out? I will try that fix soon.

Resymming on the Z axis fixed everything.

i’d rather not go over each part, its unpleasant that way, also you won’t learn as much, use some reference, you’ll be surprised what you might learn.
glad i could help
