straight lines in edit mode?

ive been using zbrush for a while but for some reason i cant figure this out.

im trying create perfect vertical straight lines around a 3d cylinder.

so im wondering if theres an axis containt when drawing… like photoshop’s shift key to lock a line to every 45 degrees.

so basically i need a tutorial on how to make a trash can with vertical rivets

i can only get so close trying to do it by hand…(see image)

thanks

In Edit mode, first click on the object , (no release mouse boutton) make a very little move and press “Shift”
You will obtain the blocked straight line wished
At 0°, 45°, 90° as Toshop
Initialize you Cylinder 3D at his increase maximum if you want some nice detail !
Have happy Zbrushing!

Ps If you want particular angle, Rotate your Cylinder before
Pss For the rivets if you have the Zb2 look at the Tut about Projection Master !
If not use the Multimarkers
In any case make the cylinder first, and redraw rivet after
When you draw the rivet on the cylinder, this rivet will be drawing at the “normal” of the cylinder pixol touch by the rivet center point !
You can move this center on the Tools object / Modifiers/ Window preview (the little red cross) (just click on it and move:)
Else if you use the multi-markers, you can re-move all objects in edit Mode, rotate and size, each objects but not the structure of object!
When all is in the right place make a “polymesh” for have just one object

My recommendation would be to use Projection Master. When painting with any of the 2.5D brushes you can choose the Line stroke type. Hold down the Shift key when painting your stroke and it will be squared to the canvas.

thanks for the suggestions but…

the problem is projection master wont work for this situation… im trying to use the radial symetry …

the best ive been able to do so far is use the masking tools on the 3d cylinder primative… but those tools wont work with regular polymesh…

any other ideas guys?

Always in Edit mode
Take the Alpha 0 Totaly white
Rotate your object3D as you want
Begin the selection out of the Object with Ctrl pressed
= you have a drag rectangle selection !
So make a fine selection rectangular = a fine line  (Alt +Ctrl = unmask)
Invert the mask
Apply any deformation

Ps But the suggestion of Aurick must work!
See the tut about The sword in Zb2 about the Projection Master!
I believe that you can project any 3D object on another
So project a tube = that you want
Pss Have you try also the grid in the Selection mask ?
(grid + column +row)

i would still have to create the ribs individually if i used projection master… and depending on how many i wanted …that would be quite tedious and imperfect in the end

i am trying to create shape like the one last image down

theres no way meats is using projection master to do that…the lines are perfectly even and beveled …

Those are not modeled in the way you are thinking. Those are actually 3D primitives that have a mask applied to them, inflated, etc. In the Tool pallet there is a subpallet called MASKING. You can create some rather complex looking objects by applying several masks in succession to the primitives and then by using the Deformations commands. Here is a simple picture showing you what was done. It is a Cylinder primitive.

… of selection with Ctrl = mask or Ctrl + Alt = unmask

  • Drag rectangle selection you can mask any form on your volum !
You can also take any form of Alpha ! (here only the drag rectangle + Alpha 0)
    Pilou
But you can take a circle , a star, anything as alpha  z.jpg
    Rustic method but efficient

hmm…

but i guess that only works with a cylinder primative and not with a polymesh3d …?

…with any object 3D !

Ps But my method above this post works for any volum 3D  Post #8
