This is the best I could come up with SC. I tried to do a ZScript but I lost the entire image several times, I think I am having problems with my Graphics card.
The Conch. When you find a conch shell on the beach, there is usually a portion cracked at the pointed end, that is how the part you eat is removed. It is cut away from it’s attachment in the shell through this hole and then pulled out of the large opening
on the bottom.
When I get a chance I will do another one from a different angle.
joe i think that sc will be happy to see this shell… excellent colors, painting idea, and modeling…
Another Beautiful One DeeVee!
o wow…thnx for the info …I have about five of them I bought in a yard sale and I wondered by they were all slightly damaged as you described…now I know…though mine are all bleached solid white…they are still wonderful forms and look great on the patio
btw how do you eat them…fried boiled pickled breaded raw?
Thanx, Joe! I think you did a great job, and thank you for the explanation of the hole…I wondered about that…
Ron you eat them all different ways…
Conch chowder, Conch fingers, and the way the guys who gather them eat them…Raw with a little lime juice…
They also have this thing that looks like a toenail that helps them get around on their foot…!I regret not tracking down one of these ‘toenails’ when I was there because I would have liked to saw out a hair comb from one…
Thank you again, DeeVee!
Thanks SC today has been one of those days so I did not get a chance to reply to Ron’s question, thanks for doing that for me.
SC, the toe like apendage that is attached to the flesh is shaped more like a claw, I have never seen one large enough to make a hair comb, but that is related to those I have seen.
My favorite method of eating conch is marinated with vineger salt hot peppers ketchup lime. You cut it in thin strips and put it to marinate for a day or two. That is supposed to put a little lead in the pencil also. I guess that is why the island guys like it so much.
Oh…Lead in the pencil huh?..That explains my Carribean experiences!!!
Thanks for the additional info Joe…I never actually saw the ‘Claw’ thing…How big are thay?
thnx guys…that was very interesting…well if they are anything like raw oysters or like snails in butter and garlic then I know I would love em…LEAD in the Pencil…roflmao…now that is funny…but that is what they say about oysters here…so who knows…Load me up a bushel of them…muhahahahahahahah Very nice image also Joe…
and if they can make walking sticks out of dried hog penis’s then I dont see why they can’t make combs outta toenails
You guys are great The largest I have seen was not more than about three inches. I had a few, I capped them with gold and sold them as pendants for guys. If I can find them I will send you at least one. BTW islanders very seldom keep the conch in the house, they think it is bad luck. We have a complete house here on Grand Cayman made from conch shells. It is on the tourist rounds. I will try and get a photo to show you what it looks like.
What a thread! And what an AWESOME painting.
I just spent the day at the beach with my daughter. We found a large fighting conch walking in the surf. Crazy looking alien being really. But the shell is lovely.
Excellent painting as always.
