Stone Wall, How to?

I need to model and sculpt the big stone facade in the middle of this composition. I want to nail all the shapes of the stones and show how each has been cut to fit with the other irregular stones to shape the tomb.

I tried drawing out the shapes of all the stones and then using shadowbox to create them, but the resolution required was huge.

Does anyone have any recommendations for how to best get a base mesh for all of these stones?

I was able to get the shape of the stones by making a mask, but I can’t figure out how to extract the polygons and get some depth to my mesh. What I got was a mess…

Use retopology to get the mesh exactly the way you want.
