Stifled Smile

stifled_smile_300k.jpg

Greetings!

I create this one to brush up on my sculpting and texturing skills. Stifled smile is one of the most charming expressions in humans, so I decide to recreate it. I used Zbrush for sculpting and texturing (which are all hand-painted), Mental Ray for rendering, Maya Hair and Fur, and Photoshop for compositing and color correction.

Thanks for looking. Comments and critiques are mostly appreciated.

Nice render!

As far as stifled smiles go, you mean trying not to laugh/smile?

If that’s the case, I think the mouth expresses that very well, but looking in a mirror and trying it myself, I can see more tension appearing around the eyes and brow.

I remember watching a tv show that said we smile as much with our eyes as we do our mouths (that’s how to spot a fake smile, the eyes stay relaxed). So yeah, she should be fighting the muscles around her eyes as well.

Great job and a beautiful image nonetheless!

Great job. Someone you know?

The hair is great as well.

yeah, really, damn nice!!

Beautiful girl, it really expresses what you want to practice, great sculpt and texturing

Ho man…that’s some great work. This is the kind of stuff I look for here. I’m not so much into the gruesome science fiction stuff…I’m too old for that. But this kind of realism always pleases me.

What program did you use for her hair?

Moar!

petekasim: thanks for your reply, I’ve been trying to study the whole facial muscle system. There’s a great book called Facial Expression by Gary Faigin which also talks about the setup of this type of smile. I tried to follow it as closely as I could and create those particular wrinkles on the eyes when the smile occurs, but I guess I could push it a little further. I appreciate your comment.

AVTPro: Thanks for your comment. No this character was just created out of my head, with the help of anatomy books of course, but no particular reference was used.

wethand: Thanks

Ariel_90: Thank you

Cadmium77: Thank you. I used Maya Hair for the hair and Maya Fur for the eyebrows. There’s a fairly easy but very effective hair tutorial which I found online http://wargasm.fortawesome.com/tutorials/MayaHair/MayaHair.html Kudos to Mike Fudge!

Thanks for the link Laskoalex. I’ll be looking forward to seeing more of your work.

really great piece but i do have one complaint

the freckles on her face look very unnatural, they seem to be too dark on the face

I did a quick adjustment to show you how much more natural a lighter freckle would look

Great work work man, the render has a very nice feel to it.

Digital_Vulture: Thanks for your reply, I’ll take your comment into account.
aesis412: Hey Jackson, thanks for the kind word. How are things? I wanna see your demo reel.

Nice face, very natural. :+1:
I agree with Digital_Vulture.
