Stencil Quality Issues?

I’m currently using 16bit alphas from Surface Mimic and seem to be getting really bad quality issues when turning them into stencils. I can work around this by doing a combination of DragRect and Layer Morph targets but I really like how stencils work and if I can fix this I could use them in some situations.

Does anyone know any common issues with stencils when your using high quality high resolution 16 bit alphas? Does it possibly get compressed badly?

Here is an example of the issue.

Thanks.

I believe you hit the nail on the head. I remember something about 16bit stencils showing up very poorly and having a stepping effect. I believe 8bit ones also have a problem but not as bad.

I believe spotlight doesn’t have the same problems that stencil does. It is also quite useful in that you can store multiple alphas for use and save them for later as well if you choose.

Thanks for the advice on Spotlight, it came through without any corruption/compression issues. I didn’t even realize you could paint height in Spotlight. One issue I had was it seemed to only use a certain range of my alpha. An example would be if my height map went from 0-255 (black to white) I only get the 0-90 range, once it reached the 90+ range its starts to clip and doesn’t paint anymore of the height information. it seemed really… weird… Not sure what I’m doing wrong…

Thanks.
