Star Wars Rancor

Finally done! This was the one project for my 129a maya class, each student was asked to model a rancor. And thanks to this community I was able to resolve some problems the class and I were having, great job guys. This was my first completed project using zbrush, I just love the pipeline! Love zbrush.

I used Maya for the base mesh, zbrush for the normal and cavity maps, for both the rancor and the base. Photoshop for textures. And using SSS fast skin shader and mental ray with final gather. Unfortunately my desktop died a few days ago (photons, final gather, and global Illumination was too much for it) and now it won’t turn on… thankfully I got what I needed off of it before I had to turn it in. But it did not die in vain, my teacher really loved my project. Woot!

The images will probobly shot up a little bit better then the video but I’ll show both.

Hope you enjoy.

Thats just sweet and I love the lighting effect you used on it.

Awsome thanks. Yeah everyone says that when they see it. Sometime I really want to push it and make it with better lighting. Maybe with some Image based lighting.

Thanks!

You could try using a interior hdri image along with your current lighting. That should add a little more life to the scene also I’d add a glowing backing behind the cage door emitting the orange light I think that would be nice. But please don’t take too much of my advice this is probably better than anything I’ve made.

really nice! great modeling and texturing, easily the best rancor model I’ve seen so far. the lighting dirama adds a really good atmosphere too, very reminiscant of the scene in the film.

I would be tempted to boost his specular in areas, make him look more sweaty. also some dripping drool would be cool

the environment and lighting is great.

nice work on this piece.

Really cool ideas. And thanks.

Dripping drool… image on a plane with an alpha map on it? Whats the best way to make drool?

I was trying to do some cool stuff with Photons, and Global Illumination. But then my desktop died… I think I was pushing too hard. Wont turn on now, but I’ll get it up and running soon enough and get those images off and post them here.

Thanks for the comments guys. I worked really hard on this and I’m glad it shows! :)

Thats great, it looks like a resin kit! The barred shadow is a nice touch! :+1: :+1:

Thanks Skull that was a grid map made in Photoshop and then mapped to the color node.

I like it very nice work!

Thanks Shadow. Ill try and post some new pics up soon.
