Stan Winston Tribute

Thank you so much. Stan caricature is my personal favorite too
A lot of credit goes to Sebastian Krueger for his amazing+fun painting, of course.
A shame I could not finish the Predator bust on time as well. I will, sometime soon.

About the rendering, I’ll be sharing my settings (shader and lighting) sometime this week. It’s quite simple, since I didn’t have a lot of free time to do a better research and tests.
The Stan render was the longest, about 1 hour 10 minutes, because I just didn’t optimize the scene any bit. I just imported the highres model at 3.something million polys and rendered it using Mental Ray+Final Gather.
The other two were faster. About 25 minutes each frame.
My machine is a Dell dual quad core 2.2 with 8GB of RAM and a QuadroFX 3500.

About turning on indirect illumination on the fastSSS shader, I did it for Stan, not for the other 2. Stan was also the only one rendered with final gather. I used one single area light and about 3-4 white planes for lighting and reflections.

Pumpkinhead and the TRex were rendered with fastSSS but without final gather. I used 3-4 area lights on each. That made a lot faster to render but didn’t have the global illumination feel of Stan render.

I didn’t use any HDRI. It’s all area lights and/or white planes, in a very dark grey environment, to give the studio light feel. When I use HDRI, I normally leave final gather in charge of the lighting. I normally don’t turn on the option that makes the HDRI to emit light, but it all depends because I did use it in some of my past works.

I hope the information helps and thanks again for stopping by! Lots of talented people who I really admire posted here. So, back to you all, my friends!
-Kris

Wow awesome works as always Antropus and great tribute, hope you win!

And yes thanks so much if you share render settings!

It’s good to see some great works from you again

Amazing, a fantastic tribute to the man and his work.

AMAZING WORKS!!!
Love the Stan Winston bust and pumpkinhead the most! Always admired your work since you did the “hand poly modelling” tute lol. One of the most all-round cg artists imo!

Ive been wanting to model pumpkin head for so long, never got around to it…that is soooo awsome… PUMPKIN HEAD RULES

Beautiful Kris!
I honestly thought the Stan was a 3D print as well.
You never cease to amaze.

Awesome work Kris!

Are you putting together his whole trophy room?!?

The only thing cooler I could think of would be a diorama of Stan sitting, surrounded by all of his creatures, but with all of them in that same style you did Stan in!

Insprational stuff as always!

(Man, I just had a look at the original painting and you just nailed it! Such an awesome painting.)

Truly excellent work as always Kris :+1: :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

Really enjoying your Stan Winston caricature most of all, and you’ve most certainly done him proud there

The other models and sculpts are exceptional also of course, and once again, it’s great that you share your work and rendering process here with others’ for their benefit.

cheers

Chris

I can’t be very original, but thought I would add my admiration for your work. Awesome!

wicked stuff, man :+1:
especially Stan

great works. Love them.

No comment Sir, excellent, in all terms.

Very nice collection Antropus. I enjoyed looking at them. What I like about them is that they all had a “finished” look, not necessarily a rendering thing. The models feel like you really cared about them while you were making them.

I have a minor issue with Trex thou, his eyes seems too much like a human eye for some reason, not necessarily a bad thing but I think it takes the wild animal feel out of it. Maybe it is the shape of the reflection that is on the eyes or the almond shape feel. Anyways I am sure you know all about them.

Good God Antropus! that’s incredible work, not that we’d expect less from from you, but these are something special! :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1: :+1:

Thanks for sharing info about the rendering settings. Again, great work.

Thank you so much guys.
As promised, here are my render settings. As I said, there’s NOTHING special, since I had so little time to put 4 complete models, posed, textured and rendered in a little bit more than a month. So, no fancy shaders or light but I’m posting here anyways because I’m sure someone can get little insights by looking at the used values. I hope it helps someone and don’t forget: a good post in photoshop adds the final touch, always!

PS great work at the Rabbitholes show too!

Awesome stuff Kris, I’ve always loved your work. Stan’s bust is the best from these models, for me. And also thank you a lot for sharing your making of with us. Looking forward next works from you :+1:
