(Stan Winston) T-Rex - Work in Progress

Thanks lemontmoon!

wow that was quick you already painted him^^ Great job really, are you using the Xoliul Shader?
Was is the Polycount? Are you going to give him a pose?
Can’t wait to the end result.
Best,

  • Kenny:)

Hey Kenny!

His front half is 6.300 tris, and his rear (I split them up for texturing/UV space purposes) is 4.326 tris. So he clocks in at a little over 10k.

The MAX viewport now natively supports real-time map rendering, so I don’t need to use the xoliul shader anymore  (I used to all the time, but since 2012 came out MAX’s viewport has improved drastically)

He’ll be rigged and animated  So I can put him in whatever pose I want. I should have some run and walkcycles up in the near future.

  • R.

woooooow. have you painted the rest of the body yet?

Hey immilesaway!

I have given him an overal (very) rough pass. The face has had a little more lovin’, but it’s nowhere near the final quality that I have in mind. Just playing around at this point  More soon!

looks fantastic!

Thanks Loki!

Today I should start actual detailing of everything from the neck down. I’ve been bad and mainly been focusing all of my attention on the head and neck region.

Here’s another update:

Rex Update 4_7.jpg

And @ ministerart: I still have to make the changes to his forearms, but I think I will postpone those until I transpose him again

More soon!

That’s coming out great, Fox! Keep at it!

Thanks Teyon!

Great detailing, Fox!

Thanks Voodoodad!

Wow man, very cool.

Great work on the details. :+1:small_orange_diamond:+1:

I’ve just been looking around more to learn more about what these beasts may have looked like. I found there exists a couple of small examples of T-Rex skin and it looks like Turkey skin more or less.

Then I find today an article about the Yutyrannus huali found in China recently, a progenitor to the T-Rex that lived 60 million years earlier. It was covered with fuzz basically, I image that looked like the Down feathers on modern birds. Now they think it’s possible that the T-Rex may have looked the same. The skin would indicate it may have looked furry and covered in downy feathers. Quite a different look than has been represented until now.

TRex Skin tail base.jpgtrex.jpg
The Grayscale one is from the underside of the base of the tail. From the size of the bumps in the skin, they may have had feathers a lot like a turkey except from what I can gather the early feathers were short and fluffy. Would be interesting to see what one looked like if they did have those feathers all over the body.

Started working on this guy again  Still loads to do, just wanted to share another update:

Realtime viewport render from MAX.

More coming soon!

Awesome. I really like how the smaller details seem to be placed very specifically rather than just ‘better put some more in here’. I’m still at the stage where I get that wrong a lot

Cheers,
Brian
