Spotlight and lo poly Models

I have an unwrapped model (with several sub div levels ) and i want to know if i can use spot light to texture the lopoly model.

I had read about poply painting in this mode and that you needed the geometry from a hi poly model for it to work.

Al, i wish to do is use my ref photos to place over the model and then export out as a diffuse map to continue working on in photoshop.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
