Split Layer without loosing detail

Hi there

I have got a layer that has sculpting and Spotlight texturing on it . I would like to separate the texturing from the sculpting. Unfortunately the texturing looses all its detail and looks just blurry after I split the layer. Is there a way to avoid that or do I have to split layers before working on them?

I can still see all detail in record mode but not when I get out of it…

Cheers

duplicate your layer with both sculpting and polypaint…we’ll call these layer 1 and layer 2

take layer 1 and remove all painting info…you’ll have to fill with a color, flat gray 50% will work so you can use an overlay layer style in photoshop to remove it completely.

take layer 2 and turn it off. store a morphtarget of your mesh without the sculpting detail. turn layer 2 back on and then switch your morph target. Now your mesh should be back to only having painted details on this layer.

hope this helps.

Mmmmh, I tried it multiple times, but it doesn’t work. I did as you said:

  1. Duplicate the layer
  2. Fill layer 1 with grey
  3. go on layer 2, turn it off and store morph target
  4. turn it back on and press switch Morph target

…now I got a grey layer with sculpting and a polypainted layer with sculpting
