Spirit of Halloween

[Xhead-ears-sm.jpg]

The one thing I realy like about halloween coming up is thats it’s a great excuse (not that one is needed) for doing a shed load of monsters and gouls. This one is a freestyle from a sphere (ears were sculpted and added using mesh insert and blended in using the clay brush) in about 1 1/2 hours.

Its a bit early for halloween I know but this one had to be out of the door in advance. Happy halloween for later this month.

Creepy little fella Darth

Maybe you can give him an asymmetric expression… very cool modeling… and fast! :+1:

Actually he already is …you’ve just got to look a bit harder than normal. Right side of image has more closed eye, higher cheekbones and the jaw has a slight slant to it to help give him a sense of ‘being’. I couldn’t go too far into face pullling expressions with him as the brief form my client were specific for this.

Turntable

Here’ s a quick turntable of this one so far.

Wayne…

Hi Wayne,

just saw the turntable and absolutley love your model. Excellent work.

Thanks, of late monsters aliens etc are going out of fashion in the 3D world in favour of more artistic pieces. But in my view a techincal speed sculpting excersise is just as valid as something more artistic. Besides which its very relaxing lol.

Few more tweaks…I’ve noticed theres a definate yoda-ish shape to him now, which wasn’t intentional.

Wayne…

Saw it on ATS.
It’s great.

Just a few minor tweks this time to tighten a few areas up. I’m trying to avoid using HD for this in case I need to do an external render of him. So I’m using a HD level only as a aid to sculpting more freely on the highest SubD level.

Wayne…

Really cool piece. I’m not sure why people haven’t responded to it, but it belongs on the frontpage  imho.

Keep it up!

Ah now you see, thats a mystery up there with how the pyramids were made and how ‘bermuda triangle’ was ever a hit I’m afraid. lol  Although to be fair I model for myself as a rule and not for others. So lack of comments isnt’ exactly going to have me running crying in my beer joke.

Wayne, I have only just come accross your work and I have to say I am very impressed. This is creepily like a face I had in a dream once and nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw it!!!

You not in the Scared Silly contest yet pal? you giving the rest of us a chance eh? :stuck_out_tongue:

Anyway, nice work. Looking forward to seeing more of it.

The way I work isn’t really condusive to competitions. I rarely work from source art for my sculpts and freestyle things starting from a general theme. As most compos ask for your intial artwork and concept drawing (and I dont use them as I freestyle alot as I find it doesn’t wall me in creativly), it sort of rules me out. Plus as this is done a favour for a client I didn’t think it fair to enter.

I’m still trying to find a way of getting rid of that ‘darth yoda’ vibe of this as its sort of distracting as that wasn’t something I’d planed on it turning into. The tourble is now its been pointed out to me, all I can see is damn yoda lol. I’ve jus got to see where this takes me (as chances are I’ll still mess about with it after its been handed in.)

Start of the body

[SpiritOdHalloween1-sm.jpg](javascript:zb_insimg(‘72126’,‘SpiritOdHalloween1-sm.jpg’,1,0))

I’ve had an itch to give this guy a body for a while (which hopefuly also will help to dispell the yoda look-a-like thing.) Although not needed, I couldn’t resist adding one. Its still at a very rough stage and doesn’t yet ‘gell’ with the head on level of detail. so I’ve got afair bit of work left to do on it yet.

Wayne…

Yoda! is this the Yoda that comes out at full moons? Sorry couldn’t resist. To be honest and to try and put your mind at rest I really don’t think he looks like Yoda too much. The general head shape and ears are close but I think it stops there. It’s the trouble with being a Sci-fi fan I guess, you compare all you do to what you’ve seen on the big screen.

Anyhow, the body has made a massive difference, the creature is no longer a shadow that jumps out at you, but now tangible creature that will not only jump out on you but eat your liver for the sake of it. Sorry rambling again.

One slight crit, the muscles on the neck seem to taper too much at the top. it doesn’t look like his head can move too good. Maybe the neck should be a bit shorter… look at me, criticizing the expert when I have only just started in the world of 3D… sorry…hope I haven’t offended. :o

Part of the neck issue is that as the head is a totally seperate sub tool to the body, the transition is a bit harsh. Although the neck may well end up shorter later, lthough I want to avoid pushing him towards the proportions of a child where possible for this one, so its going to be an interesting judgement call.

Hey dont feel bad about the crits, every constructive critisism helps to improve the artist within us. years back I used to hate crits and get really niggly…then I realised that a good crit pointing out the things that are wrong wiht a sculptar worth a million good ones.

Very nice details! I like the muscle fibers around the waist area.
How many polys does this guy have currently?

If memory serves correctly, there are 6 million in the head and about 22 million in the body(5 million standard polys) and body is from ZSpheres and the head from a sphere. There are still a few things I want to do on this one yet before I move to the next stage.

Incidently this sculpt uses an identical workflow as Gent Into ZBrush vol 2 dvd out very soon, only difference is with this I am not limited to the length of a dvd time wise.

Continuing the theme from the lower abdomen, and added a stand in pose for now.
