Spider Robots

Hi everyone!
Thought to share some spider robots I’ve worked on recently!
The main idea behind this miniature was to create a highly customizable support unit in the battlefield that can move and attack in different ways using extra turrets: minigun, flamer, laser and missile.
Multiple permutations of the model are also possible due to the extra armour panels that can be easily removed or added in order to have a more agile unit or a tank depending on the needs.
Hope you’ll like it!!

Nice! What ZBrush features did you use? Would love to see more information :blush:

Thank you @Jaime !! Glad you like it!!

I’ve been using mainly Zmodeller , together with booleans, dynamesh, creases and clip brushes depending on the parts.

Sometimes what I like to do to get certain shapes is also:

  • use the slicing on a simple plane, get the overall silhouette I need for a certain part

  • Hide and then delete hidden the sliced sections I don’t need for a specific profile of a new subtool

  • Zremesh with a relatively high resolution, turning on keep groups if needed with curve strenght to 0. I’ve also noticed that decreasing the topology gradually with Zremesh using the “same”, “half” functions helps to gradually obtain a better mesh if needed (I might have seen that from one of Mike Pavlovich streams) :smiley:

  • After that I use Zmodeller afterwards if I need to give it thickness or change the overall details.

Also I’ve been using quite a lot the extruding edges and faces functions in the Zmodeller menu, those are really awesome!!

I still need to give a try to Snapshot 3D for sure at some point, I’ve seen the potential of that function with some past presentations, especially the way Cki Vang works with is incredible!!!

Thanks for checking this out btw! Cheers!! :slight_smile:

Looks vicious , great modeling ! How tall is the miniature going to be when printed ?

Thank you!! Most likely it’s going to be around 80 to 100mm in diameter, so quite a large piece. I’ve splitted the piece in 10 or 11 parts if I’m not mistaken, plus the extra turrets on top! :slight_smile:
As soon as I have some resin prints I’ll do my best to post the final results here!

If you haven’t done a Paid Tutorial, you should! id totally buy it.

@Gremlin thanks man, much appreciated!

@Jaime I think that actually what would be really interesting to see more often is a very simplified breakdown of some works highlighting the main steps to get to a certain point and the functions that were used during the process (together with couple of snapshots).

Like a sort of slides describing and summarizing the main points. I think this would be really quick to do for each artist, especially if there was a function in Zbrush that could automatically create a list of “description pages” and “snapshots” and export that as slides (not sure if this would be easy or not to script but it’s just an idea, hopefully not a terrible one XD).

I think it would be relatively quick to do for the creators and also relatively quick for other users to learn more about some workflows.

At the end of the day we tend to work so much that I doubt people always wants to spend hours to understand a certain workflow going through a huge tutorial. I think it’s defenitely the best way to go in depth when you need to understand properly something, but at the same time this could present also a different way of learning new techniques and sharing some tips between each others (in a matter of minutes, not hours). Everybody would benefit out of it potentially!

In other words instead of having a single breakdown with lots of photoshop and extra refinements it would be probably more conveniente in the long term having just a function to create “ZSlides” and export directly those in order to describe a new artwork.

Hope it makes some sense at least. Cheers!

Thanks for the information. I was wondering because of the level of small detail on this model and how well it holds up in the print. I am looking forward to seeing the final result !

@zzeebee Yes considering the relatively large scale of the print all the details should be pretty visible in the end especially since that all the parts are going to be produced with a very expensive high resolution resin printer. As soon as I have a some samples I’l do my best to post them here! :slight_smile: Cheers!

I can’t wait to see them. I am looking for a 3D printer or print service that allows for that amount of hard surface detail and the hard edges that come with it, on a model that small.

@zzeebee I’ll do my best to post the results when I can in the near future!! Keep in mind this miniature won’t be that “mini” in the end since it’s going to be around 10cm x 10 cm…I’m quite sure that if you print this even with one of the last 8K printers out there or a Form 3 you won’t loose details…

Re. the printing services I guess the best way would be to test a sample first to see the quality you might get…I’ve used Shapeways in the past but not for resin, it was mainly for plastic and sandstone…For resin printing I might have to do more research to be honest with you, but I know that also with Hubs for example you can request a quote…same with Shapeways basically.

I still think that having a resin printer in house would be the best solution if you really want to have total control over your models.

Hope that helps somehow and good luck with your next projects!! :slight_smile:

Thanks again for taking the time to reply. Certainly printing at home would be the best option, but I am hesitating due to the high costs, considering that I might not print that often. For what I have in mind the resolution available right now might not be high enough. My guess is that there are physics based limitations for fine detail in the process itself. What I might need is something like a "Nano -printer " yet to be build.

@zzeebee Absolutely my pleasure!
Yes I agree, I’m waiting to get a resin printer as well for multiple reasons, also because the process takes quite some time (especially if you have in mind to do it repeatedly, not once a week let’s say).
I’m also curious to see what will be next!!

@zzeebee Hey man! Hope you are doing well! As promised here a picture of the final prototype printed out with some paint on top as well!

I remembered you asking not long ago for the print so I’m back with this shot. Let’s see if I can get one soon to make a better video as well to show you some close up.

Pretty happy with the final result!! Hope you’ll like it dude. Cheers!

@4theswarm Hey Francesco,

Looks awesome man ! The surface looks like die cast metal which gives it a charming, almost hand - made look. The paint job is great as well. I would love to hear more about the details like type of resin and scale of the print. Looking definitely forward to seeing the video !

@zzeebee Thank a lot man, really appreciated! The team at Valkyrx Gaming did a great job with the production yes, and did is just a prototype so there is definitely room for improvement since there will be a better version with everything splitted.
I’ll post some more details as soon as I’m able to get my hands on one of these!! :wink:
Until then all the best with your projects mate!

amazing work!!!
