space 1

I love this picture…For ME, Its imagery like this that SI-FI is all about not the movies or other dumbed-down pop-media Si-Fi. Pictures like this force me to write my own story of what is going on…I mean its just a lonley ship over a star back ground but its awesome… Reminds me of the work done by si-fi space ship artist Chris Foss. In the early 80s. :+1:

I like all of these Kaz! I’m glad to see that you added another one. I hope to see many more :+1: :+1:

Kaz I would luv to hear more about how you created/modeled your spacecraft…it has a very kewl look to it…and your deep space backgrounds are wonderful…I have sat here all day and looked at these on and off…truly remarkable images and quite beautiful

Thanks everyone.

Here are a few tips on what I did for the ship…

Block out the basic shape. I used deformed primatives and scaled and moved them to fit. Using the Marker tool to set the correct orientation, makes it easy to switch from one 3d tool to another. Moving, scaling and changing color if desired.

You can create the detail panels before or after you block out your ship. I created mine after using a new layer and hiding the first layer. I created an image to use as an apha. Similar to this:

then MRZGrabbed it for the alpha. If the Alpha is not quite what I was looking for, I will sometimes use the texture that was grabbed as an Alpha as well. Once I have an alpha, I use it as a mask on a 3dPlane and offset it on the Z axis. A couple of panels like that and I’m ready.

Just use the new tools to drag out details to the basic blockout. Change color, material, Zadd, Zcut and Zsub as desired:

Now that is a neat looking ship! Especiallly against that star field. Very nice work. And thanks for the tips!

so do u use a new tool or just its alpha with a single layr brush?

ah way ta go… now I wanna move to space… hey great stuff here…

Stellar work on your space scenes, also very nice modelling work on that ship Kaz, luv the blue glow. :+1: :+1: :+1:

Wow Kaz!This is some very fine imagery.Love those starfields. And yer gall darn ship there is exlnt!

The-Hydra,

I use the actual tool. That way it will automatically align itself with the surface you are drawing it on. Then you can resize the tool and move it as needed.

then u just put it on your model and let the top of it pop out from your main model?

Yup, thats it. Using the move tool you can adjust how much it will protrude. You can also scale it along its Z axis to control how “tall” the tool is.

thanks a million Kaz!!! I used yer alpha and came up with this…a couple of boxes and cylinders and your alpha and a snakehook tool…I dont know if this was what you were talking about doing…

Thats it Ron. Cool!

OMG Kaz…learning curve…geeez…so much just hit me and came together after that post…I did not know that you could use the 3d brush as a rotatable tool in conjunction with an alpha…sh#t!!! that is so kewl !!! this is how it happens folks…the little things make the biggest difference…a bunch of ideas just came together due to this thread…thnx so very much Kaz!!!

well I did a little test showing what I had learned…I recorded a zscript…its a bit on the cheesy side but shows some of this …if it doesnt work right let me know …put show actions on…
It isnt much but gives an idea of what I learned…my alpha I made isnt that good…anyhoo…

Hey Ron,

I did not know that either. Very cool. That makes it easier in some cases. Through the Modifiers you can make it Double-Sided, which is cool.

kaz those skies look pretty real

Inter-Galactic, K-Man!!

one of my favorite digital artists online (aside from Southern) is Greg Martin… he does almost nothing but star scapes… a planetscape here and there… but overall his images are the stuff you can only imagine future versions of the Hubble taking pictures of…
