Something seriously wrong with "Frame" in 3.5

It might just be that I’m not used to it, or I’m doing something wrong. Sometimes when I click the “frame” button to fit the mesh into view, it would either fit it in a weird position(misaligned or zoomed way out) or just fit the model out of the viewport. Sometimes I even lose my model and won’t be able to find it in the viewport anymore. I have zbrush 3.5 r2. I didn’t have this problem in 3.1. Has anyone else been having this problem?

You probably have one or more of those single vertex spikes sticking way out in some direction, and it’s throwing off the bounding box for your ZTool. There are tons of threads on here about how to resolve those.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I don’t have any kind of spikes/verts. The model is fine in 3.1 and it’s fine with 3.5 until sometimes I press frame and it decides to change the fov, or move the model out of view… It’s definitely not a stray vertex problem.

Is it a consistent issue with that subtool (assuming you have more than one)? Do you get a framed subtool with one press, zoomed out view with the next press, framed subtool with the next press and zoomed out view with another press, etc ?

In that case you most likely have a leftover vert or 2 connected verts/polyline somewhere in one of your subtools. If ZBrush still imports polylines like in 3.1 you will not be able to see them but they will affect the volume.

Not sure if you know but the framing function changed in 3.2/3.5. The first press frames the selected subtool and the second press frames the volume of all currently visible subtools.

I’m also experiencing the same issue with one my models. It was imported as one tool and split into 32 subtools using ‘group split’. While working with one of the subtools, the frame button will place the subtool offscreen. Hitting the frame button again caused the entire model to be place at a distance. Now hitting frame yet again moved the subtool even further away from the canvas and hitting the frame button a forth time move the entire model even farther away. Strangely, after the fourth time, the subtool and model do not move any further (as far as I can tell). I had reimported the model into 3ds Max and confirmed that there are no stray vertices and the model is sound. I can actually live without the ‘Frame’ functionality but I do frequently hit ‘Alt’ + click accidentally while trying to move or scale. If anyone does know of a way to elimate that ‘Alt’ + click shortcut, that would be greatly appreciated. It will alleviate my immediate problem (losing my subtool off canvas and wasting time trying to find it) until this problem is resolved in a future update.

Hi Emat3D, Preferences > Edit > Auto Select Subtool controls the Alt + Click behaviour.

Thank you for the tip TVeyes.

After doing some experimentation, I have some more information in regards to the Frame problem. It seems to occur when importing a model at startup, essentially replacing the default Poly-Sphere with the imported model. I could not reproduce the problem any other way. No problems occur until the model was separated into subtools. At that point the ‘frame’ feature will shift the subtool off screen. Oddly, it did not affect all of the subtools. I also noticed that this problem only occurs while in perspective view. I could not get the problem to occur while in orthogonal view. The work-around that I use now is to clear the canvas (to remove the default sphere) prior to importing a Model. For those Zbrush’ers that strictly work in orthogonal view may never see this problem. I hope this information helps.
