Some general questions (re-toplogy)

How do you go about applying retopology to a model where the mesh becomes hidden or unable to access ? eg,… where lips fold beneath/against each other and into the mouth.

Do you mask paint the underlying mesh and hide the lower or upper lip ? If so, what needs to be engaged or disengaged in order to paint the mask ? I’ve tried with edit topology on/off but I am unable to paint or mask off the underlying mesh.
I am only able to “hide” the underlying mesh using ctrl/shift… release shift and draw rectangle to hide. I thought I could ‘paint’ a mask and then use it to hide that area which was painted (?)

I’m having great difficulty in using the rectangle hide method to hide the areas of the mesh I am speaking of,… mouth, behind ears, eye sockets…

Or,… Do you create a morph of the original mesh with the mouth posed open and apply topology there and then morph back to the original static pose ? Not sure how this would be done in re-topology mode.

Forgive me for asking as I’m sure this has been asked before. I don’t know what to put into the search engine to find the answer and wiki doesn’t seem to guide me here either.

Thanks for your time and advice.

Also,

When creating retopology, when you begin, a vertice is created in the center of th emodel (where the Zsphere origin is). After I began applying my retopology I deleted this vertice/edge.

Is this ok to do ? Or was this a bad move on my part ?

Thanks for the help.

as for hiding things…You can turn on lasso so you get a better way to select the areas you’re wanting to hide.

as for the center point during retopo. It doesn’t really matter. but you are better off not doing anything with it. before you want to put down any points just double click on the canvas, off your model somewhere to unselect that point. Then you can start working like usual.

A good way to hide geo is to go to Transform>PtSel. This will allow you to select and hide the geo just by click drag selecting points, I find it easier. I always hide the geo at the lowest subdiv. Then create polygroups for areas that I’ll need to hide often, like the upper and lower lips. Ctrl>Shft>Click on a polygroup to isolate it.

Thank you very much goast and TriAxis. Very helpful !
