Some beginner help needed (subtools, and more)

Hi! Apologize ahead of time if I’m in the wrong place.

So, I’ve been trying off and on for months to learn Zbrush (R6), as I have a crazy amount of ideas that are now achievable with this software. The problem is, I simply cannot get the hang of the “simple” things. I’ve watched hours of tutorials. And have picked up on quite a few of it’s nuances. But, damn it really is hard to implement them without getting frustrated and having close out the program and start over. I’ve worked with Photoshop since version 7, I’m pretty handy with C4D, and I’m slowly learning Modo. But ZBrush is just about the most frustrating program I’ve ever opened. Which amazes me when I see these brilliant creations that come from it.

  1. I’m trying to make a spiral made out of water. To achieve this, I started using a sphere and sculpting it out and down. No luck. Then tried using the helix, thinking it would work like other 3D programs, it doesn’t. I feel if I play around enough, I could get a decent shape. Problem is, adding other tools, like splashes in addition to the main shape. Whenever I try to add a second subtool, it either removes my original shape or combines them both, which is ridiculous. So how would I go about adding say, 50 additional shapes (or tools/layers) as different sculpted splashes?

  2. Dynamesh. Sometimes I can get this to work. And sometimes, it doesn’t seem to register when I click it. I’ll think it did, start moving a shape around, only to find out I’m completely destroying the geometry. Any tips on this? I basically draw a sphere, hit edit, hit make 3D shape, and then hit Dynamesh, correct? Please, talk to me like I’m stupid, I think that’s the only way I’m going to get over this hump.

  3. When I play around, I make abstract shapes to get use to the tools. But it seems I can’t ever get past the point of it looking like a bunch of square polygons, even after detailing a bit. Am I supposed to subdivide to get rid of the polygonal look? Or am I just not texturing enough? Basically, does using clay, etc eventually start to remove the geometric-ness of the sculpt, or will it look that way up until rendering?

Also, I am totally open to paying someone as a personal zbrush tutor, if anyone is interested. Or exchange of services, let me know if you’re interested!

Much appreciated!
