[SOLVED] - Symmetry over hidden parts?

Hi there

Say you are working on a hand and hide everything else… even with symmetry on when you unhide everything only the visible hand shows the modifications …

What i have been doing for ages is box hide one hand, box hide the other… (So now we have the model with no hands) Invert hidden (so not we have 2 hands in space)… then hide one… alt+click to center and set rotation on the hand… then undo to unhide the other hand…

Well is there a better way to do this? As while this works still in 3.5 as i am learning so much new stuff thought i would see if there is in fact a better way to go about this

As this has some problems… namely when you are trying to use transpose to modify the fingers symmetrically… to adjust for example length…

Well, yes…hiding polygons is one of the tools that ZB gives you to isolate and protect geometry from changes, so if you hide something, the changes wont apply to the hidden. If you want to sculpt with symmetry over both hands, they must both be visible and unmasked.

The easiest thing to do, would be to make the hands their own polygroup. Go to subD level 1, where the polys are much easier to pick and choose, and hide everything but the hands to the same edge loop on either side, then go to Polygroups in the tool menu, and select “group visible”.

Then, when you turn on Polyframe, you’ll see the hands are a different color from everything else. From that point forward , you can easily hide/unhide just the hands by Shift-Ctrl clicking on them, at any subD level.

Also, it is not necessary to “set pivot” in this situation. Simply make sure “Local Transformations” is on, and it will rotate around the last point of contact on the model. So you can easily keep one hand in your viewport while you sculpt on it, and not worry about the other.

Finally, you can always use Smart Rsym to mirror sculpting from one side to the next if you lose symmetry, but it would be better to simply sculpt with it on in the first place, and use that to repair any errors.
