Soleil Royal WIP

(I’m one of the Amapi 8 creator and I’m one of the Hexagon creator too (well, hexagon was more my baby than Amapi). That’s why I own it (and use it)

Is hexagon as good as amapi? I was really disappointed to see amapi go.

sah : Hexagon is far better than Amapi 7, but Amapi 8 is a lot better than Hexagon2 :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, some progress this week end, but not as much as expected, I had to go to the beach, play with my son, etc… well, a social life!

Then… I continued the sculpted patterns which are located between the upper deck cannon. Like the cannon, I will use a mix of displacement and normal maps for the final rendering. About the rendering, I will do all the scene with 3DSMax, I had my Max 2009 license this week end.

SR_deco_a_02.jpg

Nothing crazy on this part, just a basic sculpting, some masks and a very nice real time shader, found on ZBrushcentral, which fit perfectly this mesh, for what it has been designed on this war ship.

The face is not accurate, I mean, nice details, because I don’t have such detail references, and I guess that on this war ship construction in 1669, the sculptor weren’t able to sculpt so much items like that with a lot of fine details on the face.

Critics and comments are welcome

OMG you so got me interested now! I adore old ships and she’s a true beauty, this one! Really looking forward to seeing the construction :+1: :sunglasses:

This will be great, but I have a question. Why you start with the details and not with the basic shape of the ship? To make this shape you need the plans, do you have them and can you show the way how you will make the shape of the boat?
I am curious how this will end with all the details you put in it. I realy hope you have enough ram-power to do this exelent job. Good luck!!

This is gunna be top row… but you already knew that!

Mind boggling level of elements… bravo on your choice and start… I’m so blasted new at all this I can’t imagine how you’ll assemble the parts…

Amazing!!! This will be interesting to see as you complete.

Intervain: I hope I won’t disappoint you
Bas Mazur: I built this boat when I was young, I still have the model kit at my mom house, I will grab it in a couple of week and i hope I still have the plans. Anyway, I bought the building plans for the wooden model kit of the Soleil Royal and I should have them soon. Then, when I will have all that stuff, I will start to build the hull and all these elements and start to do some assembly.
Gumpshmee: I will be proud about that, but let’s wait the end of this crazy work :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I went of reading about the Soeil Royal for a bit…I thought it was a Galleon, but the beak and foremast are apparently wrong, she’s a “Ship of the Line”… Proud vessel by the reports of it.

I raise you one “bravo”

I got the blueprint of the wood model kit today. i will start to build the hull this next week!
More sculpting soon!

Good luck with those blueprints!

i’m sorry for the delay of my answers, a lot of work these last days. Then I spend some time to create some small parts of the boat these last days, when I find 5 minutes.
No sculpting yet, it will come later

I will be following this

I did a ship of line also last year for a movie. You can see the process from low res stand in to final composite at www.planetx.nl

I planned on using zbrush a lot… but there was simply not enough time to over detail the ship so ended up using zbrush only for a couple of rough ornaments and some texture work.

The ship I build was the Batavia a VOC vessel. The people at the shipyard who build the replica kindly provided me with their original building drawings… so based the base of the ship on that. Great thing was that I had all the hull crossections that way.

for the smaller details we took over 500 pictures of the original… and used them also for the texture work.

the rope rigs where the hardest thing to do… as there are so many!
so we didn;t put all the ropes on it.

anyway… if you need some reference photo’s for textures or whatever… just drop a line… I’ve got tons of em.

good luck!

Peter

Peter, I love the ship you made! Great to share your textures with Totyo :+1:

Very nice work and interesting making of Peter! (your video is too small
!!)
I will be glad to have some maps (to help me, perhaps more the ropes)

I’m not in a hurry to create this ship, I don’t have production deadline, I do it “for fun”, that’s why I will use a lot ZBrush. But for some parts, I will do it the easy way. For the Hull, to have the good proprtions, I will use my 3D scanner (a Microscribe) to pick some reference points on the model kit I own (the Heller one for those who want to know).
But all kind of reference / informations are welcome!
I send you my email through a private message. Thank again for your support (same for everybody!)

glad to help… at least I know who to ask if I need to build another ship

I have the making off video bigger if you want.

btw… I also have the soleil for you on 3ds max if you need it as a template or something for your model.

Years ago I purchased the deespona modelbank… always handy when you need a model for an animatic or whatever… we planned on using the soleil in the background in one shot in the movie… but wetn for a faster 2d solution.

So if it’s any use to you I can send you the 3d model of the soleil as well.

@bas : thanx! made in holland eh!

While eating my sandwich at noon, I did a digitalisation of my model kit (two mesages above). This is the result :

SR_scanned.jpg

As you can see, it’s really rough, but it’s just to have the good size. You can see on some parts weird curves: it’s because i did some random spots on the surface to have some kind of helpers when I will create the surface.
I just did a symetry for the curves, I only scanned one side.

Now, it’s time to go to work :stuck_out_tongue:

what an awesome project! can’t wait to see more.
thanks for making this public. :+1:

This is a thread which will come back from the dead

This project has been stop because of a lack of time, but also because, in 2008, it was a lot more complex then expected to build such battleship.

Since 2008, a lot of new crazy ZBrush features has been introduced and then, will make this work a lot more easier. If I take the gun on the first page, now, I wouldn’t do all these basemesh in another software and would use features like shadow box for the primitive creation and of course, QRemesher to recreate the beshmesh quickly, and UV Master for the UVs. Etc

Because I won’t have as much time as I would like to continue this project, I will do some adaptations and changes and then going more freely in the creation of this old french battleship
