Soleil Royal WIP

Hi!

This is a new WIP I’m starting, something crazy, which will be a very looooong run!
Wel, I will do the “Soleil Royal”, one of the Louis XIV french king (Sun king) warship.

Below, some photos of model kit of this boat. as you can see, a lot of details and stuff to sculpt / model!

I will do all the base meshes with Amapi 8, some other modeling with ZBrush, all the sculpting and details with ZBrush, I will use CrazyBump for some normal maps and alpha creations and the render / composition with Modo or 3DSMax.

I already done one type of gun boat (is it the exact name?), and some other parts, but not enough done yet to be shown…

Here it is some ZBrush rendering:

This WIP will be very interesting to follow. You´re off to a very good start with the cannon! Keep us updated and good luck with the project :+1:

ARE YOU CRAZY???..wonderful start. I cant wait to see the progress you crazy French man.

Something I started yesterday night, which is far to be done. I continue it a little bit today while eating my sandwich
Between the gun, you can see some sculpted paterns :

(entre les canons :))

Because of the lack of information, I did some sculpting researches: I created a simple base mesh in Amapi and imported it in ZBrush (1), I did a very fast rough sculpting to search the shape and the design of this patern, I did a retopology (3- sandwich and retopology are not good friends  and then, I have a base mesh, close to what I want, ready to be sculpted again.

I can use the projection, but I don’t want to use the first sculpting, it was just a test, something simple to find what I wanted to do. I will start over, to have something a lot more clean. I think my new mesh will have enough polygons to give a good result with a normal map when the sculpting will be done, or to be use with a displacement.

This workflow can seem weird, but like that, I can focus only on my reaserches and then, I can focus only on the technic, and not both at the same time, losing what I have in mind

Later, the shape done.

This one looks like it is going to be a classic zbrush piece. :+1:

Judging from the quality of the canon detail, I think think this is going to be a very nice piece. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Where did you get Amapi 8 from? I thought Amapi was dead.

i really hope that this project finishes well, great start so far. looking forward to seeing the rest.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this one. You’ve got some really useful detail at hand, so please keep us posted.

I’m one of the Amapi 8 creator and I’m one of the Hexagon creator too (well, hexagon was more my baby than Amapi). That’s why I own it (and use it)

the cannon looks great… this is going to be an amazing feat!
i cant wait to see the updates!

Is hexagon as good as amapi? I was really disappointed to see amapi go.

sah : Hexagon is far better than Amapi 7, but Amapi 8 is a lot better than Hexagon2 :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, some progress this week end, but not as much as expected, I had to go to the beach, play with my son, etc… well, a social life!

Then… I continued the sculpted patterns which are located between the upper deck cannon. Like the cannon, I will use a mix of displacement and normal maps for the final rendering. About the rendering, I will do all the scene with 3DSMax, I had my Max 2009 license this week end.

Nothing crazy on this part, just a basic sculpting, some masks and a very nice real time shader, found on ZBrushcentral, which fit perfectly this mesh, for what it has been designed on this war ship.

The face is not accurate, I mean, nice details, because I don’t have such detail references, and I guess that on this war ship construction in 1669, the sculptor weren’t able to sculpt so much items like that with a lot of fine details on the face.

Critics and comments are welcome

OMG you so got me interested now! I adore old ships and she’s a true beauty, this one! Really looking forward to seeing the construction :+1: :sunglasses:

This will be great, but I have a question. Why you start with the details and not with the basic shape of the ship? To make this shape you need the plans, do you have them and can you show the way how you will make the shape of the boat?
I am curious how this will end with all the details you put in it. I realy hope you have enough ram-power to do this exelent job. Good luck!!

This is gunna be top row… but you already knew that!

Mind boggling level of elements… bravo on your choice and start… I’m so blasted new at all this I can’t imagine how you’ll assemble the parts…

Amazing!!! This will be interesting to see as you complete.

Intervain: I hope I won’t disappoint you
Bas Mazur: I built this boat when I was young, I still have the model kit at my mom house, I will grab it in a couple of week and i hope I still have the plans. Anyway, I bought the building plans for the wooden model kit of the Soleil Royal and I should have them soon. Then, when I will have all that stuff, I will start to build the hull and all these elements and start to do some assembly.
Gumpshmee: I will be proud about that, but let’s wait the end of this crazy work :stuck_out_tongue:
