I really like to build up forms with the soft clay brush, but when I hold down alt to cut in, it really has no affect. I can build up, smooth with shift, but alt doesn’t work.
I have fiddled with various brush settings but what I came up with never worked and I just don’t know enough to get fancy with brush modifications.
Any suggestions?

You’d have to reduce the Inner Depth value. Brush / Depth sub palette.
