So many simple things to ask for

Hey there again,

after months of avoiding Zbrush I started again with sculpting. I started sculpting so many times, but after a few strokes there occured always big problems for me as a bloody beginner. This is the point were I throw my pen in the corner of my room and wait for months to pass until I restart sculpting again… and again… and again.
To be honest, ZBrush is a wonderful piece of software, but the start is a pain. The most simple things are so hard to accomplish - for me it’s to say.

This time I started a simple cartoon dragon. I’m currently doing the basemesh with a Dynamesh sphere, where I add other primitives. Now i wanted to add a very simple foursided pyramid. But how? How can I make a foursided Pyramid? There are so many primitives (and some useless primitives) in the tool palette, but no pyramid. And I can’t find a matching option in the Initialize palette in any of them. So how do I make a simple foursided pyramid?

This is what I mean. I’m so frustrated when I see such masterpieces in the Top Row but I can’t even get a simple pyramid managed.

I’d appreciate if you could help me with my problem. And I’ll post more upcoming questions depending this dragon here too if you don’t mind. They’ll be also “noobish” questions for sure. So I’d be glad if you can visit this “thread for starter problems” sometimes. Maybe I’ll get my first sculpt done with your help. I’d be very glad about that

Thanks in advance!

To make a 4 sided pyramid, use the Cone3D and, in Initialize, change the HDivide to 4 and adjust Z Size to suit your needs.

(optional)- Turn on Polyframe (Shift+F) and adjust VDivide to what you want.

ps: If you don’t know how to do something, just come to this forum and ask. I’m sure somebody will be glad to help you out. Getting frustrated is not a good way to learn. Hang in there, it does get easier.

Ask questions as much as you need. Stick with it and get over the hump, it’ll be worth it. Also sometimes it’s a good thing to take a break and walk away and come back later. Take a break when you feel you need one, however don’t make that break be too long (like a month). Once you come back you’ll pretty much have to start from square one again. Take smaller breaks, like an hour or two or a day or two. If you go too long you’ll forget the basics again and have to start over with the frustration.

Zbrush is great for organic modelling. For hard surface and mechanical work it’s not very friendly. It is getting better but there are better programs out there. One I use a lot is Blender, it’s free and you can download it at www.blender.org. If you’re used to other 3d software like Maya, or 3DS Max it’s similar.

If you have a different problem, start a new thread. If you just keep posting in this thread then any new problems might not get seen because new posts to a thread will not bump you to the top of the forum anymore. The only way anybody will know that you posted something new here is if they are still subscribed to this thread.

I’m terribly sorry for the late reply. Some crazy stuff is going on in my real life. Anyways thank you for all your kind responses! They were really helpful. I played with the VDivide slider in the Initilize of the Cone3D. That changed nothing so i went on to the next primitive. Damn, so close to the right option
I think I’ll start the dragon again but next time I’ll start him with ZSpheres. I think it’ll be easier to pose the basemesh as with Dynamesh. But I’ll need the pyramid anyways, so thanks again for your help

Greetings!

You are not going to see what VDivide does unless you have Polyframe turned on, also, it was optional as I mentioned in my first post.

I would suggest you read my initial post a bit closer. That is how you make a 4 sided pyramid in ZBrush.

I apologize, I meant this in another way. I told you in the first post, that I’ve tried all the different options of the different primitives. And this was how I did it. I tried the VDivide while experimenting and changed to another primitive as it doesn’t did anything.
Your answer was perfectly understandable, I was only facepalming myself not to check the other Divide slider on the first try.

Thanks again
