Smoothing without losing geometry

Is there a way to use the smoothing brush so it only smooths the surface instead of actually removing geometry? I have several thin, stringy pieces of geometry that I made using a mask and then inflating and creating a morph target. The problem is, the new geometry needs to be smoothed out, because it has jagged edges from the mask. But when I press shift and try to smooth the edges, the thinner pieces just get completely erased. There must be another way to smooth a shape without actually erasing parts of it.
