Smoothing, subtools and suggestions!

Hi there, hoping someone can help me out here.

I have a model of a tree with a branch I want to animate breaking off it. I’ve broken the low res branch off the tree in max, filled in the hole in both the tree and the branch and imported both back into ZBrush as subtools. How can I preserve the smoothing of these two objects when I divide them so I can detail them? Or am I going about it the wrong way?

I COULD just export the two seperately detached objects from Max directly into ZBrush without capping them, but the smoothing still isn’t going to work anyway as it pulls the two meshes apart. Any ideas?

isolate the areas of the branch that you want to have keep they’re “smoothing”. So just the capped holes most likely

tool>geometry>crease

invert the visible polygons

tool>geometry>crease

Now divide.

You mesh with maintain the edges that you creased

Hi goast666, thanks for the response.

Unfortunately, that doesn’t quite work. The crease doesn’t fully stop the edges pulling away from each other as soon as the two subtools are divided. It also doesn’t work if the two have been creased and then merged into one subtool - as soon as you divide the mesh, crease or no crease, the edges pull apart.

Think I have it figured out now. I’ll just attach the two elements in Max, weld them together, offset the UVs for one of them, bring into ZBrush, divide and detail, UV group the meshes and split them into seperate subtools, works a charm! I’ll just export both back into max, weld on some capping geometry to both pieces and I should hopefully be done.
