The smoothing is too strong at 5 Z intensity & 30 draw size
How do I control the smoothing?
I’m holding down left shift and left clicking the mouse and it smooths my model way too much.

Smoothing is controled via the settings under “Tool>display settings”, when “quick edit” mode is disabled ("transform>quick edit button). Use Ctrl-mouseover on the sliders for more info. For smoothing during sculpting, its almost always better to simply divide your mesh another time or so (Z3 can handle it). Display smoothing comes with a high performance price, best used pre-render, and display smooth shaders tend to eat minute detail.
Each edit mode Brush stores its own Z Intensity value but holding SHIFT does not show that value, it will still show the value for the primary brush. Switching to the Smooth brush (not by holding SHIFT) and changing the Z Intensity will use that value from now. You can also hold SHIFT and adjust the Z Intensity slider. This will change the value for the secondary brush as well as the primary brush.
Hope that makes sense.
The secondary brush (when holding SHIFT) can be set by holding SHIFT and clicking on a brush.
I totally blew that one. I think I’ve answered the issue I addressed above this week so often this week, I’m just sort of doing it on reflex. Yeah listen to TVeyes.
The only thing I’ll add, is that the smooth brush (which are the settings that Shift-smooth goes by) also have a “smooth setting” over on the smooth brush button that can be adjusted, in addition to the Z-intensisty. Read the smooth brush info in the Z3 wiki for details.
Also, by design, the smooth brush works only on finer details the higher the SubD you’re working on. Work on higher SubD’s to smooth only surface detail while leaving Coarse detail and form intact.
Finally, masks can be applied in % values, so applying a low % mask can inhibit smoothing if all else fails, but I think you’ll find a happy medium before then.
Thanks guys, that worked perfectly.
