Smoothing groups?

Hello.

When creating normal maps, the workflow i have is:
1.Create a model in 3ds max.
2. Export it as an .obj
3. Import it to Zbrush.
4. Sculpt.
5. Use Zmapper to generate normal maps.

What i want to know is, are the smoothing groups of the model (in 3ds max) affect the result of the generated normal map?
I’ve noticed that all the models in Zbrush look faceted, as if they had no smoothing groups. Is that the case?

there are no smoothing groups in Zbrush. You are correct.
You can import the “smothing groups” into Zbrush from max using the plugin for it. Its on the main plugin page on pixologic.com Anyway. it doesn’t actually import the smoothing groups, it simply creases the edges where smoothing groups change…not sure if you need it, but I thought i’d let you know.
