smoothing details with the bump viewer material

Hi,

I’m adding some fine detail to my sculpt using the bump viewer material and have found that in Z4R2 the regular smooth function does not work in RGB mode. I have not used the bvm before but I assume that the smooth worked in Z4 because I have a well known book on the subject that demonstrates its use.

I want to smooth the bump map itself, not the underlying geometry.

I hope there is a way to do this, I know you can reduce the effect using 50% grey but it’s not the same.

Thanks for any help.

Works fine for me. Remember that smoothing at high subdivision levels will have less effect. Try dropping down a level or two.

All the Bump Viewer Material does is to translate the color intensity into bump detail. It is a purely visual effect and has no effect on your model’s geometry or color. So you might like to switch to a different material to check what effect your smoothing is having on your polypaint.

Right. Ok, thanks Marcus. I think it must be because I am at a high subdivision level, HD in fact. Thing is, I need the HD level to get sharp enough detail so is kinda annoying to have to step down into standard subdivisions just to smooth. In the video tut I was looking at it seemed to work fine at HD. I will be sure to check my polypaint on a different material to make sure.

Cheers.
