Smoothing Brush Issue

Hello all,

I’m just starting to learn Zbrush, so this may be an issue with a brush setting. When using my smoothing brush via shift key the brush creates rough patches. I’ve tried switching from Z add to Z sub, adjusted Z intensity, and all other brush options I could find. The issue still occurs. When using the “smooth strong” brush, the issue seems to go away.

I am using Zbrush 4R8 on a Mac (High Seirra), with a Huion GT221Pro Tablet.
I’ve included an image below for reference:

Thanks in advance for any advice on this issue.Screen Shot 2018-03-09 at 8.09.45 PM.png

brush>reset all brushes

see if that fixes your problem.

If the topology is wrong (triangles, messy geometry etc) normal smoothing can create geometric artefacts. Smooth strong avoids more those problems. But if the geometry are normal regular quads then you should not have those problems and perhaps the post from beta is the solution. Hard to say as you don’t include wireframe.

Beta_channel,

Thanks for your reply. The issue still occurs after resetting all brushes. I made a short video showing the issue below.
After reinstalling Zbrush, the issue seems to be resolved.

Altea,

Thanks for your reply. This issue occurs with all geometry. I made a short video showing the issue using the default PolySphere. I turned on PolyFrame to show what the vertices are doing.
After reinstalling Zbrush, the issue seems to be resolved.

That’s the behavior when Shift+Alt (ZSub) is used, even though it doesn’t seem to be activated on your video. Something might be causing the alt key to be registering, or the draw setting to be inverted. Does toggling Zadd/ZSub back and forth work (or do you get the exact same behavior if you switch the smoothing brush to ZSub)?

You are right, what is suppose to do Shift+alt? I suppose cant be there only to make a mess of the model.
I see it also does fit all when clicking without dragging.

Cryrid,

Thanks for the reply. I was able to isolate the issue to my drawing tablet. When using a mouse and the shift key to smooth, the smooth brush works normally. When using my pen and shift to smooth it causes the shift+alt behavior to occur. The shift+alt behavior will then be permanent (even when switching back to a mouse) until Zbrush is closed and reopened. I’m going to play around with the drawing tablet settings to see if I can find a way to fix it.

Do not set the shift key to be used on the pen, I had the same problem, set it to an express key on the side of the tablet and no longer have an issue. If you insist on using the pen to smooth then change the smooth brush to the smoothpeaks brush and it will work.
