smooth tool destroying my model

I have been watching various tutorials on using the clay and standard brushes to build up form, and then use the smooth tool to blend your results. This is an iterative process, so the artists are constantly smoothing what they just sculpted.

It seems like at times the smooth brush is to intense, and it didn’t seem like changing the Zintensity was doing very much.

What are other areas to adjust the intensity of the Smooth brush? I am working at division level 3-4, is this too low?

Lower the Smoothing Curve. The right side of the curve should position to the 1/5th of the original value.

As Jester said.

And the smooth brush is designed to work on very hi-res meshes (which it does) so it’s jacked up a bit by default. Try lowering the Z intensity down to 5-10 at lower resolutions and increasing intensity as you subdivide.

To set the Zintensity for the Smooth brush, actually select that brush in the Brush palette before setting the Zintensity. Each brush retains its own settings at all times. When you hold Shift to temporarily activate the Smooth brush, you are activating ALL of that brush’s settings – including its Zintensity. Meanwhile, your currently-selected brush will continue to use the currently visible Zintensity setting.

you know your right…I have been setting ZIntensity for the current brush, and of course that’s why smooth brush Zintensity hasn’t been working for me at all, it’s because I haven’t been selecting it from the panel and then adjusting settings.

thanks all!
