Smooth Cartoon Characters

Hi, A bit of a ZBrush newbie here. I’ve got the basics down but it’s the details I’m having trouble with.
I’m trying to learn to make cartoonish characters quickly in ZBrush, yes I know that sometimes this can be more quickly done in a standard poly modelling app but just for the sake of learning I want to do it all in ZBrush.

The problem that I keep running into is lumpy shapes. Like this cartoon head below, it has way more lumps in it than I want. Is the answer just to mask off all the main features and use a big huge brush to smooth with? It seems I have a difficult time smoothing the areas that I want without losing the shapes that I want to keep. Any advice?

So maybe this is a more specific question. When I have an edge like this that I’ve sculpted and it ends up being a bit bumpy, how do I smooth it out? Most all models that I see have smooth clean edges. Is there something that I should be doing with a clip curve or some type of a curve?
