“Sleeping Venus”( Detail 01) - Sculptural Restoration by Ran Manolov

A drawing in the Townley Collection ( British Museum) shows a statue of a lying hermaphrodite, surrounded by three infants. The drawing shows the stage before it was censored.

I was commissioned to entirely re-imagine and sculpt the missing figures of all three missing children plus some more work done on the hermaphrodite itself.

The work was based on that single drawing showing only one angle of the statue before it was censored( the male characteristics and the infants around his breasts were removed from the figure.).

I am so impressed with this work. Seeing ZBrush used so effectively for restoration is inspiring. It’s something I have often thought of but have not seen much of. Is restoration often part of your work?
