Sketchbook - Alban Pllana

Hi everyone!

I’ve been teaching myself for the past 3 years the production pipeline for video game characters and decided it’s about time I started this sketchbook to get more motivation and continue improving. Any feedback is more than welcome, feel free to rip everything apart!

The first character worth showing was a great learning experience. I did both the concept and the modeling, which proved to be doubly difficult. I still haven’t quite exactly mastered modeling faces and hair, so the mask was mostly an improvisation. The model was also posed before sculpting, which isn’t ideal for video games, but I learned a lot in the process.

Texturing this character was a great opportunity to try out and learn Quixel Suite. There are a lot of things I would have liked to improve on this piece, but I eventually had to call it done last year and move on.

My latest character is based this time on a proper concept art by Concept4 (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/BkO4m). Learning to sculpt faces has been relatively smooth so far, although texturing is a different beast. Experiments involving hair cards and eye materials are also well under way.

Finally finished working on this character. Learning to model realistic faces and realtime hair has been extremely challenging with quite a few hiccups along the way. I actually went back and bought some tutorials/resources and resculpted the head from scratch. The hairstyle was particularly difficult to model and I’m still not perfectly happy with the end result, but I’ll continue to improve with my next project.

Wanted to participate in a challenge for such a long time! This is the highpoly I’m making for the Artstation ‘Beyond Human’ challenge for game character art.

The concept art is part of the Character Design category of the challenge and was made by Tatyana Latypova.

I like your work. Really do. You do seem to have some background, perhaps in tradirional media like painting or sculpting?

Please keep on posting!

Thanks, Erik! My ‘background’ is in computer science but I’ve since pursued 3D art. I cannot draw for the life of me but I find digital sculpting perfectly intuitive.

I recently got back to polishing my submission for the artstation challenge and I’m calling it done. I was quite disappointed with the amount of polish I managed to sneak in before the deadline, so I wanted to put in some more work into the textures and rendering setup.
