'simulate' the illuion of segmented column or rope?

this may seem as an obvious answer… but the problem to me lies in a bit more of a complex answer…

how would i go about being able to guide a rope-type segmented lengy coumn-shape along a surface…
and have it give the illusion that it was a coiled rope… using normals etc…
but to save poly-count… just be a regular column?

i’ve tried everythign i can think of under the sun in zbrush’s repetoir… but this relatively SIMPLE problem has got me completely boggled…

i just want a low poly rope to wrap all around… but in high-poly mode… have the look like it is a coil like a tightly wrapped telephpone cord or braided rope… WITHOUT the actual polygons… how could i do this by using bump or normal maps??
