I fill one layer with my reference image using load texture and fill layer, and place my model on the next layer - my model is partially sunk into the texture (sigh, zbrush…). Ok, so move my reference layer in z direction - model no longer sunks. Ok, now to sculpt I have to clear the model layer, use the tool again, and enter edit mode (sigh, zbrush…). I do it, and my model has inverted normals! What? Why? Please help?
I can’t think why you should be getting inverted normals. But there’s no need to switch layers. Having placed your model on the second layer:
- Switch off Edit and switch on Rotate. The Gyro appears.
- Click and drag downwards outside the Gyro. This will bring your model forward.
- You can click inside the gyro and drag to rotate your model to check that it is clear of the background.
- Switch Edit back on and continue sculpting.
Thanks, that worked. “Fill layer without distortion” would be a nice feature for ZBrush.
Also, do you know a way so I could have “Rotate on Y Axis” turned on after startup?
Your image won’t distort if the Document is the same proportions (or you can use Texture>Crop and Fill).
You can record a macro to switch on the Y Rotation and then have that run at start up:

Wow, that macro at startup is really useful, thanks. I also recorded my favourite render settings.
