Simple sculpting question. Small sculpt details.

I’m new to ZBrush. I’m following the Intro to ZBrush DVD released byu Eat3D. Its really good so far. I’m just having some trouble with getting fine details such as little scars and stuff onto my sculpt.

When i sculpt with the standard brush on a very low size - 1-5 - my stroke comes out as spaced dots. I’m using a tablet also. If I do a hard stroke, it’ll be dotty and spaced.

The only way to get it good is to start really light, but it just seems wrong. Do I have to have it subdivided a lot?

any tips?

There are a few possibilities:

  • Try a different Stroke type.
  • Move the pointer more slowly.
  • Turn on Lazy Mouse (also in the Stroke palette).
  • Hide the parts of the mesh that you’re not directly sculpting. Fewer polygons means faster interaction with the visible mesh.

A quick fix for brushes and tablet strokes suffering from this dot-to-dot problem in 3.5 in addition to what Aurick said to check (they’re all helpful) is to go into the brush/modifier palette and turn up Trails to about 10 or 11 or so. This gets rid mostly of the dot-to-dot effect with one little tweak. At least it does for all my brushes that have this problem since this release.
