simple saving question

If I hit the save button after making some strokes in a document, then close the document. I find that there is a zbrush document in my zbrush folder but when I open it it is blank. Do I have to do a “save as” before my first save?

Hi,
By using ‘save’ before loading any other document or using the ‘save as’, ZBrush will save the document in your current folder with the default name “ZBrush Document.ZBR”. If you have drawn into the canvas before saving then this document should not be empty.
Try deleting the current empty “ZBrush Document.ZBR” and test the ‘save’ function again, if you are still getting a blank document, please let me know.

Hi thanks for quick response. As you can tell I havn’t been doing much saving. My girlfriend just lost a pile of work because she was using “command save”. I know that it should be control with ZBrush.

Anyway I have sort of worked it out but it is still very curious. If I make some marks in a new document and hit save then close document there will be a ZBrush document.zbr in my ZBrush folder but if I double click on this ZBrush will open with a blank doc.

However I have just discovered that when in this new blank doc I can go Open and if I select the ZBrush document.zbr then the one with the marks opens!

This means that when I double clicked on the ZBrush document.zbr in the folder it opened Zbrush but not the actual document I clicked on. This is what confused me.

Now I’ve worked it out it is OK but it does seem a little odd. Is it meant to be like this. It’s not a big deal of course just a little counterintuitive.

Oh, wow. I’m one of those freaks that never clicks a file to open it, but always opens the program and then the file. I thought I’d see if the same thing happened to me, and it didn’t. Instead, ZBrush wouldn’t open at all. I got little pop-up windows one after the other that said, “Unable to open file. E:\ZBRUSH\ZDOCS\ZResources\Images\LightMaps\DefaultDiffuse” and “E:ZBRUSH\ZDOCS\ZResources\Images\ZMovie”, etc. About 7 in all. Then Windows Me suggested that I restart my computer.

I wonder if it’s the operating system, rather than the program, that is creating these oddities? For the record, before Windows would even let me try to open the file, it had me map the file system to use ZBrush for the .ZBR file type.

Double click on a ZBR document and drag&drop is not yet supported in ZBrush, it is however in the future-feature list.

Well as I said it is sorted for me now. At least I found out by someone else losing work. It could have been my two hours.

But one does have to be careful because if you don’t rename the document and you start a new doc then hit save it will save that over the old one! Whoa. I’m glad I’m not finding this out the hard way. Most other programs keep renumbering their generic save names to avoid this.

However I’m not complaining as I use Corel Painter and almost nothing works!. They have just upgraded to 7 and they haven’t even bothered to fix their scripts which would be brilliant if they worked. And you should see their Vis Mask. It is completely stuffed. Corel say they may possibly consider doing something about it in version 8.

So any miniscule bugs which I find in other programs don’t mean anything to me. It’s like if you came out of 10 years in jail and you went to a restaurant you wouldn’t care if the olive oil in your pasta was cold pressed or not.
