unless you know you’re going to need more detail in certain areas, in which case wouldn’t it be better to have denser meshes there, so that you can add detail at lower levels of subdivision, thereby using your memory more efficiently?

Hey Scott. I have gone through your displacement map guide and I have one problem. When I go to render the object I only get a sillhouette. I can tell that the displacement map is working, but the object itself reflects no light. I’m guessing this is because I’m using max 7 not max 8. (the menus are different from what you describe. What changes do I have to make? I really want to learn how to make displacement maps the way you describe in your guide, but I only have max 7.
