Silver Surfer

Hi all,

I modeled Silver Surfer based from the great John Buscema’s renderings.
Base mesh in 3D Max, Displacement and Normal Maps Zbrush, renders in Mental Ray.
This is still a WIP although I am at finishing stage, I just have to add a couple of more muscles and few Morphs so I can get better deformations. As far as the silver material goes I am no expert in Shaders but I tried to get that silvery look as close as I could. I hope you like it.
C&C welcomed and appreciated.

More Renders

I just thought I’d post some more images.
By the way this is my first post here and I am happy to be part of such a great community. I have learned a lot about Zbrush, texturing and modelling in general from this forum. So many great Artists here.

Nice anatomy on the muscles and a render that keeps up with the esence of Silver serfer.A great skill in posing your charachter allso.Nice
Though i think you’ll have to check on the proportions of the body again.
(the legs seem too small for this body and the head a litle biger)
All that under my humble opinion offcourse…
Keep up the good work

Hey Kasova!

I agree with giorgosv about the proportion of the body. I think by taking it down to a lower subdivsions, you can do some modifications of the body, also maybe taking it to maya or max for some scaling of the body.
I think a character like this should be like 8 heads tall.
Another thing that I saw that you might consider if you agree, would be the length of the arm muscles. It seems that the bicep it’s shorter compared to the muscles in your forearm. They should be almost the same length.

I hope I helped in something!
Keep the good work!

Javier Loredo

The bottom pic in the first post looks like a still from the movie, I like it! Maybe the shader needs a little work, try and find a good HDRI to offset it with maybe.

Great looking work, especially the torso but the limbs look really stunted. Give him a little bit of fantastic four stretch and he will be perfect.

…comic hero

I was thinking the same thing - it’s a great image, but the main thing that looks a little off to me is the upper arm. It looks a little short - maybe it is just the bicep as was mentioned above. I think if you made the upper arm and the forearm similar lengths it would look better, although I’m certainly no expert in anatomy.

I’d say work on the rendering of the model. Try adding an HDR map and try looking through www.3dtotal.com for tutorials on materials in mental ray.

Thank you all for taking the time to watch and for your advices.

giorgiosv: I also find that I missed on the proportions, but I dont think it's the legs but the bely area that is a bit longer than it should be, but then again I may be wrong but will see after I make the changes. javierloredo & blacker:I agree about the upper arm and I will try to fix it although this is a skinned character with muscles attached and its gona take me some time to do it but I m gonna have to. Squash-n-stretch:thank you .Like I said I am no expert in shaders but I will try HDRI. AVTpro:Thanks man. Frenchy Pilou: Marvel Hero and probably the best one, I think. Pieisgood:I will try it.

Now I worked more on the shader but still I am not satisfied and I think I will quit trying I am loosing to much time .
By the way didn’t fix the proportions yet, but I will and I’ll post the new ones as soon as I finish.

Thanks again for watching

Yeah maybe the belly is a bit long. But I gotta congratulate you on your deformations, the second pic in the second post is just so awesome. It’s great to see Max heads doing great stuff with Z-Brush  Did you say you are using a muscle system? One you constructed yourself?

Your poses are great!! really like them. Definitely keep working on that shader.
