Siggraph 2006 advice.

In order to ask the questions, must give you a bit of background.

Although I don’t do this for a living, I have made a little money
at it. Know people that do it for a living casually.
Am what I would describe as a hobbyist of the most dedicated and addicted
kind. Have many graphic programs and do not excel at any of them( except
Photoshop because of a photographic background)
I have attended exhibits of programs such as Maya,Zbrush, Xsi, that were
held in New York and enjoyed them tremendously
My “dedicated involvement” started about three years ago.
Since then, on most graphic sites I have seen mention made of the
various Siggraph meetings.
This year as you might know ,it will be held in Boston. I live in New
York and while this is not 'next door" it is certainly closer than California.
Would very much like to attend, but have a few general questions.

My perception is that of a combination of convention and trade show at which the various software programs exhibit their present and perhaps
future versions. If this is correct would a one entire day visit be adequate?
My plan is one day to get there, one day visiit, return next day. Would this be enough?
When I go to the site it is extremely confusing.Conferences, meetings, etc.
Considering my interest and my involvement is there any particular day ( Opening, Closing) that it is best to attend?
My perception was, go to the center, pay the admission and walk through.
Sort of like an “auto show”
Any suggestions or opinions you can give me would be appreciated.

Being an old pro at trade shows, I can recommend planning just to see the general exhibits for a day, just to get a feeling of what interests you. There is no way you can take it all in and do the conferences as well. Plan on taking a ‘‘sampler’’ trip this first time out, and make a plan for a more extensive experience next year.

And another tip, don’t try to take all the freebies and handouts back with you. At the end of the day, UPS or Fedex it all to yourself, so you don’t have to travel with it. In a single day on the show floor at COMDEX, I Fedex’d 45 lbs of stuff back to my office.

I forgot the most important thing; wear comfortable shoes.

And bring your reel…you never know how conversations might go.

acmepixel, thank you, then I am correct?

Can go there, pay to get in, see the exhibits and that is
it. Conferences, forums, meetings, not “required”

Have attended several “expo’s”: auto, marathons, franchises, boat shows
etc. Am I correct in thinking that it is the same type thing?

The home page for this thing is “overkill”.

When you go to a convention of this sort nobody is going to make you go to anything. So if you just want to check out the exhibits you’re free too.

You’d be missing most of the good stuff though.

forgive the stupidity, what good stuff?

Whatever you think might be interesting. Look at the schedule and see if there’s anything that might be interesting to you. Check it out and make sure to also talk to the other folks who are interested in that same thing. That’s the best part.

Any of these strike you as interesting?
