Should I invest in a dual monitor setup for ZBrush?

Hi,

I’m a university dean and a graphic designer - I don’t use ZBrush.

My instructor who teaches ZBrush as part of our Game Development degree program is asking for dual monitors as part of a workstation setup.

Since ZBrush is outside my expertise, and he obviously has a bias (he really wants dual monitors)
I thought I’d throw the question out to this forum as “industry feedback” to include in my decision.

So - how greatly would dual monitors improve using ZBrush?

Thanks for your consideration.
Cheers.

The ZBrush application itself, as it is now, doesn’t support dual monitors and can’t be configured for two monitors. However, a second monitor can always be used for reference or teaching matarials. This may be what the instructor is alluding to. Two monitors are always better than one.

If budget and space allow the use of two, it’s hard to get by with one

i would value marcus civis and aurick’s opinion.

There isn’t a studio in the world that doesn’t use dual monitors…well, I have no actual information to support this, and there are probably lots of places that only use a single monitor, but in this industry everyone uses 2+ monitors. I use 3 myself, 1 30in, 1 24in, and my cintique. The extra monitor is extrememly valuable for reference, documents, music (can’t create good art without good tunes  ), email, etc.

I would also balk at a school if they didn’t have a dual monitor set up, nice chairs, etc.

Hi Graphics Dean,

As zber2 says, it’s not currently possible to use ZBrush to make full use of two monitors - in other words, you can’t split the application so that interface items are on both screens, only have it on one or the other. But ZBrush does need the whole screen, not just for its complex interface but also so that a reasonable view of the model is possible, so when working with other applications or teaching materials it is a distinct advantage to have two.

HTH,

Sounds like I’m signing off on dual monitors for my ZBrush guys.

Thank you very much for the prompt responses, and I’m sure my faculty will be thankful as well.

Best regards.
