Sheal WIP

Okay, by now i’ve been around a while, asked alot of stupid questions and in all done alot of nothing, so i still feel like a newbie. Recently i’ve been working on modeling a creature form a book i’ve been writing called a Sheal. It’s not a complex creature, but good practice. This is what i’ve got thus far.
He started as jsut a head, more pictures when i find the time.

This is my first model that made it past the messin around with Zphere stage.

Open to crits and suggestions =D

Congrats on your first showpiece Forlocks! This guy is really grotesque and scary. :+1: Looks like a sick lab-experiment gone totally wrong. :sunglasses:
Can you tell us something about the beast?
Just keep going and refining, and make a good finish.

Thanks plakkie, that’s really encouraging =D

Well talking about something that’ snot officially released yet is always sorta bad. But since i own it sure. The beast is a resort of a sickness, like a werewolf. But i never felt that changing without a fuel sorce is possible. This thing kinda merges the qualities i like about werewolves (ie big and hulking) with the added quality that it grows form it’s original form (like a human) by excessivly eating. Over time it begins to look like the beast here, They still retain most of their original intelect but they gain new incentives to fight/feed/destroy, but that’s a story matter =D

childrens book  hehehe
nice stuff

Nice to hear someone having deeper thoughts about monsters! :+1:

well yeah! okay so i decided i hated the way the hands were looking so i sculpted the fingers onto the mesh rather than add them on as “claws”. I also added a fingernail-like pad to the back of his hands which will have a point later he he he, and put some forearm hair. I’m happy with it all, but i’m also unhappy with it all, i mean i’ll prolly resculpt it all later but for the time it’s blocked in and i felt i’d done enough to reward myself with the pleasure of an update.

and what i learned? Mesh extraction is a gift form the gods. =D

Props to plakkie for the idea on fur, now that i’v egot that across.

-aside from adding the fur and fluffing the mane in the same style i made the legs a little longer as before they seemed really porportionate, and this creature is mean to be kind of top heavy and tall.

  • i smothed out the feet because i think that they were on the total wrong track, i want more of a spread of webbed toes instead of the paw-like direction i was taking.

In my mind it’s starting to look like how it should. I dunno, at times i feel there is a rythum almost a feng swei to how things should happen. I played with some of the other Zbrush tool but came up with nothing particullarly interesting. Suggestions on fur would be very much welcomed =D maybe even a tip on detailing things like muscles (the mesh feels a little too clean to me in places

Hi Forlocks! I can imagine what you mean by Feng Swei; sometimes certain elements seem to grow or belong there by themselves.
I’m glad the fur technique comes to your aid. I have one tip though: the fur on the arms looks a bit strange because of low subdivisions. Erase the fur there, divide the model once more, and then use real small dots to mask out the fur (this takes some time and care). Reverse the mask and then snakehook time. That way you get smaller haires that together look more like real fur. Same goes for the loin area: you see some triangular structures there. Hope this helpes (it takes courage to do these things again sometimes, I could know).
About the muscles. I’m not an expert on them, but I can see that you already laid in a muscle structure. To my eyes, it could be made more visible. It’s quite subtle right now, for instance the abs: they look quite flat. Just push the forms you have right now. Make the creases a bit deeper and the mounts a bit higher. That way his muscular power would shine out more. Don’t change the head: it freaks me out! :grimacing: :+1:
Just my thoughts, do with them what you will!

thanks Plakkie, i’ll get right on it. =D

As for the head i actually finished working on that a while back, don’t think i’ll need to change it. It all started with just a sphere and i kept adding to it out of boredom. I’ve never really done bodies before i why my head looks so good and my body so plain/bad at times becasue each step is a fearful and cautious one.

It’s been a long road to get to this point, I’ve spend more time with my nose in various anatomy books and at my computer working than i have on actual homework at college now. I still don’t think the anatomy is perfect, or near it at that, but i’m very happy with it at this point. I’ve tweaked a little with everything since my last post. At some time i may redo the fur on the mane and on the forearms since i feel i’m starting to get a good handle on how it moves and those could use some reworking.

Well finally the creature i’ve imagined for so long is assebled in 3D. It’s quite a feeling, but now i got that rock in my throat when i think about how the heck to color it. Time to experiment.

=D

And now for a swash of pictures and a long awaited close up of the head.

Looks pretty good! The size of the head jumped out at me a bit. I appreciate that a smaller head can be used to make a body look much more massive, and that stylistic interpretations, like the intentionally distorted thighs and shoulders may be in play…but the head feels a bit small in spite of any of those factors…feels a bit out of place.

Keep it up!

Thanks for your feedback bingo, i’ll take another look at it. When i fist did the model the head was in perportion, but now that i think about it the body has gone through alot of tweaks and i never really thought about tweaking the head in terms of size to fit agian.

Such an improvement Forlocks! :+1: :+1: Those anatomy books are paying of. It’s much more bold and pronounced now. Fur’s looking better too. Great to see you’re going to color it.
YEah, it’s a great feeling if such an imagined thing comes to life in full 3D. Congrats and keep working!

Great, I love the mouse-like appearance and the face. Great expression there.

No i am not dead! i’m still very much alive. So i’ve kinda decided to make a scene with my monster before i finish him, but i want a robot to fight with. So i’m practicing making metal peices in Z. the fallowing are some of my experiments and a practice head i sat down to sculpt.

Nice! Looking forward to the scene! :+1:

this may take a really LONG time, but i khave the idea now. No more robot, i want one of my smaller creatures to jump on and stab the bigger creature, it’s inspired by one of the first action images i drew when i was real young and the two creature designs were in their first stages. It only feels right that i try to do it first.

Below is a thumbnail of the main pose idea, there after is the starting naked body of the second creature. Note, he will have armor and such, but i wanted that naked body before i tried to armor it.

This time i sculpted the body as a one peice and it only took me a few hours to get that far =D (the thumbnail isn’t the original sketch, i have no idea where that is.)

I like your stuff mate its pretty cool! the werewolfs head is freaky!
the gas mas with head and that machine thing also looks cool, keep it up i wanna see the end!

Life has been busy, i had to go in for surgery and now finals are starting, but i’ll still try to keep working on my pet project. I peen playign around with transpose, then tried to “pose in” the general scene. I’ll prolly make lots of adjustments over time and as i get more farmiliar with the concept of positioning.

It’s not a very big progress, but it starts to resemble the thumbnail. ShealvsFrellen.jpg
