Sharp Edges question

Though I have owned ZBrush for a long time, I haven’t used it much. So here is a newbie question. How do you get the sharp corners that I see other people use when they make mechanical objects or military garments for their figures? I tried to make a bandana for my Navaho by inflating an area around his head. But I can’t seem to get a sharp edge. HELP!!!

I have a second question: When I mask off an area such as the eyes and mouth, Invert, use the Divide button, and then clear the mask- all of the white lines that wrap around the head leave groves. So instead of only Smoothing the eye area, I have to smooth the whole head. Why do I get these grooves?

LD, saw your post (home and my cat is getting comfy from the vets), but what I would try (be sure the head is saved as a tool), I would tilt the head so looking up at “sky” some, and you are looking at him from the chin up. Then I would mask off a very small line on the bottom edge of the bandana, invert, and use infalte at a negative number. Try this at a low negative number. Reason for tilting is you want it to deflate not into the skin, but up into the bandana to give it a sharper look. You may need to smooth that area, but depending on howmuch deflate (that is the negative value result when using inflate)…the smooth depends on this because if you smooth it 100 and deflate a bit, it may disappear what you had. Try that. That is what I would try, and that is what I do on my lips when I lose the definition between the upper lip and bottom lip.

Good luck

very nice work so far…and love the crow’s feet around the eyes…The more I looked at this model I also realize that with altering the bandanna a bit it would also make a good ethnic model of a hispanic person. Lookin’ good :+1: :+1: :+1:

This guy might be a cousin.!
Seriously, I truly love the serene expression on his face.
That alone would take away from any minor edge problems.
When you are finished with this, I would appreciate seeing the final version
Thank you!!

For an Idea of hard edges go see this hard edge tut. See, the closer the edgeloops, the harder, more refined the edge.

As for your masking question, It is the way it is. ZB has to compensate for the addition of new polys by adjsting the entire model. You can find amore indepth explination in the Quicklinks Section. Here is a particular one.

Good Luck!
