Shared DSL

I have read about sharing a DSL connection, which involves a simple networking setup. Basically using one computer hooked up to the internet as a server (I think), and the other netwroked to it. I am wondering if there are other alternatives using the stuff I have available to me now. So, this is what I got:

One win 98 (Not SE) box with internal DSL modem, no network card. This is my main computer.

One Win2k Pro laptop with built in network card. USB ports. My Computer from work that I bring home at times.

One USB External DSL Modem.

I want to setup my laptop in the kitchen, which is not close to the other one.

I tried connecting with the laptop and USB modem, but lost the other connection, so I assume it won’t work that way. Makes sense, I guess. Any suggestions?

Thanks

Kaz, I have spoken to a lot of IT guys and this is what I am told. For a setup like this to work a hub is required, and both computers require a network card. Some of the external Dsl modems act as a hub so that is fairly easy especially if you are using Win2K or XP. They claim that if the computers are not connected to the hub it will not work especially if you are using different operating systems.
I am not into that part of the technology so I am only reporting what I have been told. The reason why I got this information is I was trying to do something similar for my wife’s computer. My DSL modem has provision to connect four computers, I am only using two and both have network cards, so I thousht I would try and get her hooked up. What I have relayed to you is what I was told. I do not know how helpful this information is but I present it as I received it.

Having only Internal and USB DSL modems make it more difficult.

It you had an external DSL modem (of Cable modem for that matter) that was using ethernet to talk to the client machine, all you would need is a cheap router.

Ethernet cable from modem goes into router, Ethernet cable(s) from router go to various client machines. The router handles all network/internet traffic.

That’s very easy to set up. I have a wireless router that is also a 4 port hub so my two PCs are connected via Ethernet cables and my laptop was a wireless connection (sitting on the couch with the laptop surfing the web while watching TV is great… as is sitting on the deck).

I don’t know if there’s a hub that’s able to take a USB input (from you exteranl modem).

I have also read about people sharing an internet connection from one machine (still using a hub… just designating that all internet traffic needs to be routed through that machine).

I am very satisfied with my hub and this company has a variety of products (and good online manuals). Maybe check them out… Linksys Homepage
