Shadow Catcher ???

Hi Everyone,

I’m sitting here stumped and hoping you may help. In the past I’ve created and used a “Shadow Catcher” material but for some reason I can’t seem to re-create it.

This material has two contradictory properties: it renders pure white with no hint of the underlying geometery but it receives and displays the shadows that fall upon it.

It can be done, I’ve done it - my aging memory cells are failing me :td:

anyone ?

Wow, Josh it sounds pretty cool! I can’t help, but I sure hope you’re going to post it if you or somebody else can figure it out!

Hi :),
The key is in the diffuse response curve. Here are the steps…

  1. Set Diffuse value to 100
  2. Adjust diffuse curve to be flat horizontal line at maximum value.
  3. Set Specular value to 0

The above will produce a color-depended flat shaded material. If you prefer to have a material that will always be shaded with a same color then simply modify one of the Colorizer materials with the above steps.
Hope this helps

Well Hello Mr. Pixolator,

Thank you very much, this indeed was how I had done it except this time I saved the material

I get a 404 when trying to download your material so I’ve included mine here ShadowCatcher.zmt

This is a colorizer material; diffuse 100, flat diffuse curve maxed, 0 spec, 15 ambient - (S1) both color modifiers set to white, blend amount 100 and flat blend curve maxed . . . works like a charm.

Thanks again

jd

a zbc-revelation once again: this mat is something i never missed but would hate to miss from now on! thank you, messrs. dorsey and alon!

Sounds like a cool material. I’ll have to try that out. Impending, I’m curious to see how you’re going to use this. I’ll be looking forward to it.

Thank you both for the neat info!
