setting up reference images in zb 3.5r2

How am I supposed to use a reference image for modeling with zbrush 3.5r2? I can’t seem to be able to make my active tool (model) transparent in order to see the background image. I’ve tried “CropAndFill” with an image from the texture pallet. I’ve also tried using a 3Dplane with the image applied as a texture as a subtool, but the active tool is opaque while the inactive subtool gets transparent. It’s weird.

Any thoughts/suggestions on how to use a reference image for modeling with zbrush :qu:

Hello, I would like to add to that problem stated. I tried to load a Image plane X for reference modeling and I can seem to load the model with the reference Image. I sure hope this has not changed as it was a great feature for 3.1.

Active tool cannot be made transparent in ZB3.5. It’s been feature requested.

. . .

tell me it’ not true nooooooooooooooooooo!

Kicking the feature comletely looks a bit too harsh… they could have just made it optional :-/

if you try one of the image plane plugins you can still change the opacity of a tool over a background image that is on the canvas. However any time you move the edges of that tool you will get a grey background until you rotate your tool, which refreshes the canvas, this has been around since 3.0 so i think its something that can’t/wont’ be changed and is why they seem to be moving in the direction of Spotlight where you put the reference over your tool, explaining this new transparency issue.

If the active tool is behind the imageplane it will be transparent.

This does not make any sense. They purposely removed transparency for the active tool? So how are you supposed to sculpt using a background image?

Does this thread still hold true?
You can’t sculpt using a reference image…?

Can this program get any more illogical and unintuitive?
I don’t think so.

It’s a joke, and I’ve given up using it. :td:

Of course you can sculpt to a reference image. Use the imageplaneX.ZTL which you cn find under Lightbox/ZTool/image plane.

In the same folder you will find an image template for setting up your reference in PS.

Hope that helps.

Oh one more thing, under Preferences/Draw you will find 2 transperency sliders that will give you the functionality you are looking for.

Thank you. That helps a lot.

Still entirely unimpressed with this program and its many shortcomings though.
