seriously low learning curve

i finally managed to build my first human model. the problem is, i 3d meshed it before finishing the face mass. when i try the clay tool, to both add substance and to later carve the features, the resolution degrades so severely that for the most part, the face looks like a bunch of horizontal spikes.
Please, if anyone has some pointers, that i have yet to find in the classroom vids, please reply.
i would love to move my work from 2d to 3d but i keep hitting this roadbloack.

I suppose retopologising the mesh would be the best solution.

If you have not started subdividing the model, (from the poly density it looks like you probably have) you can add polygon loops, by hiding polygons. Pressing the Tool/Geometry/Edge Loop button a new poly strip will be created at the exposed raw edges of the remaining visible part of the mesh.
