Selecting Models in ZBrush

Hi Guys,

I am totally new to ZBrush, I come from an XSI background.

can anybody tel me how to select a different model or reselect a model that has been deselected in Zbrush?

I know this is a trivial question, but its got me pulling my hair out!

Any help, pointers and additional info on getting up to speed quickly in ZB would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have version 3.1

Cheers

Barry

Hi

All your models are located and selected from the Tool palette. What you draw on the canvas / viewport / document (all the same thing) is just a brush stroke of your currently selected tool. If you do not enter Edit Mode (shortcut ‘T’) after you make a brush stroke, you are simply drawing additional brush strokes on your 2.5d canvas / viewport / document. This is the same as in Photoshop except here you are drawing in 2.5d instead of 2D.

The same 2.5D environment used for drawing brush strokes is also used for editing 3D models, which I guess is where people become confused.

Luckily all you have to remember is:

1 ) CTRL + N clears the canvas

2 ) Select and Draw a Tool on the canvas and press ‘T’ to enter Edit Mode. This is full 3D modeling mode no matter what anybody tells you. It just happens to take place on top of any brush strokes you may have previously drawn.

3 ) Switching 3D tools/models while in edit mode is handled automatically and done by selecting a new Tool from the Tool palette. If you are out of edit mode return to step 1.

4 ) If you need to import a new model then select the PolyMesh3D tool and press Tool > Import.

5 ) Saving your model is done with Save As in the Tool palette. Saving from the Document palette is just like saving your photoshop document when what you really wanted to save was the brush you were using.

There is a little more to it than that and I am sure the basics of the ZBrush workflow has been better explained than I ever could… and what do you know, it has indeed
